The Lord is my Portion: Devotion for Tuesday January 7, 2020

MY DAILY COVENANT WITH GOD DEVOTIONAL

Devotion for Tuesday January 7 2020

Topic: The Lord is my Portion

Text: Psalm 119:57

True believers take the Lord for the portion of their inheritance, and nothing less will satisfy them. Here we can see the true character of a godly man.

1. He makes the favour of God his felicity. Thus the Psalmist here was happy to assert that God is his portion and nothing else matters to him. Some people place their happiness in the wealth and honours of this world. Their portion is in this life; they look no further; they desire no more; these are their good things (Luke 16:25). However, a godly man take the Lord for the portion of their inheritance and their cup, and nothing less will satisfy them.

2. Another character of a godly man here is that he makes the law of God his rule (Psalm 119:57b). David had spoken wisely and well. He had declared his choice: he preferred the word of God to the wealth of world. It was his firm resolve to keep, that is, treasure up and observe the words of his God (compare John 14:15) because he loves God. Here he confesses his binding obligation of his vow to God.  Beloved, what is portion for the year – Is it God or wealth of the world?

Food for Thought: Psalm 16:5

Memory verse: Lamentation 3:24

Prayer: Use Psalm 16:5 and Lamentation 3:24 to pray.

DELIBERATE WRONGS

DELIBERATE WRONGS   Wednesday July 15, 2015

Text: Psalm 19:7 – 14           Memory verse: v 13

Matthew Henry stated that, “The Holy Scripture is of much greater benefit to us than day or night, than the air we breathe, or the light of the sun; to recover man out of his fallen state, there is need of the word of God” (v 7 – 11). Indeed the law of God is perfect. The word translated law (Psalm 19:7) literally means all that teaches us true religion. God's word warns the wicked not to go on in his wicked way, and warns the righteous not to turn from his good way. There is a reward, not only after keeping, but in keeping God's commandments (v 11 – 14).

However, the Psalmist pointed out something that could make him fail in the law (v 13) – deliberate wrongs (presumptuous sins). This earnest and humble prayer of the Psalmist (v 13) teaches us that we may fall into the worst of sins unless we are restrained by God’s grace, and therefore we must watch and pray lest we enter into temptation. As you go forth into the world today, ask for God’s grace so as to avoid all forms of evil and sins in Jesus name.

Action: Take some steps that can save you from deliberate sins or wrongs

Prayer: Use Psalm 19:13 and 14
