Consequences of Greed: Devotion for Saturday June 12, 2020

MY DAILY COVENANT WITH GOD DEVOTIONAL
Devotion for Saturday June 12, 2020
Topic: Consequences of Greed
Text: 2 Kings 5:20 – 27
Naaman didn’t make the mistake of going back to Syria after his miraculous healing. He went back to Elisha as a mark of gratitude for what God of Israel had done for him. He came to offer Elisha his gifts instead of offering them to God. That was his understanding. Elisha refused because it will amount to taking the glory of God. Most Pastors of our age would gladly hijack such offers and corner them for our personal use. Such men will easily quote 1 Timothy 5:18.
While Elisha was rejecting those offers from Naaman, Gehazi, his servant out of greed was lusting after those gifts. Thus he went after Naaman to ask for some of those gifts his master rejected. He even went ahead to tell lies in the name of his master. That made it double offence (2 Kings 5:22). Naaman gave him more than he requested for (2 Kings 5:23).
Gehazi never knew that his sins will find him out. Most times when we commit sin and tell lies about them, we easily forget that the Holy Spirit is there with us and can reveal anything we do because He sees us and all we do. Elisha opened his mouth release the word of God and Gehazi became leprous as was Naaman. Compare this to Acts 5:1 – 5.
Greed has grievous consequences. This story is a warning for those who are greedy; priests, their servants, politicians and their aids, civil and public servants, etc. Don’t have an eye on what God has rejected. Be contented with what God has given to you to avoid had I known at the end. What do you think would have been the reaction of Naaman if he heard what happened to Gehazi? Your guess is as good as mine. Have a great day.
Food for Thought:Greed is a bottomless pit which exhausts the person in an endless effort to satisfy the need without ever reaching satisfaction” – Erich Fromm.
Memory verse: 2 Kings 5:27
Prayer: God, deliver me from any form of greed in my life in Jesus name.

Obedience Brings Testimonies: Devotion for Friday June 12, 2020

MY DAILY COVENANT WITH GOD DEVOTIONAL
Devotion for Friday June 12, 2020
Topic: Obedience Brings Testimonies
Text: 2 Kings 5:13 – 19
Now Naaman calmed down after his attendant had persuaded him to try the method Elisha offered. He did as Elisha instructed and he was cured. In some cases, servants are sometimes wiser and better advisers to their masters, and they give better advice, which when followed will be well for them.
What Elisha commanded was not cumbersome. It was a simply command that seem foolish in Naaman’s eyes (see 1 Corinthians 2:14; 3:19). Things of God and his commands are always too simple that most people do not take it serious. Mere words from Angel Gabriel was all Zachariah needed to have a child. He doubted God and was punished because God had determined to do it. If not, he would have missed that opportunity. In Genesis 26:1 – 6, 12 – 14 we have the story of how Isaac obeyed God and he became an envy of the Philistines.
The level of your obedience determines the level of your blessings and miracles. When Naaman obeyed and washed, he had a testimony: I was once a leper.

Today many of us miss out from God’s package of blessings for us due to the ways they undermine God’s instructions in the scriptures. Some of us take it lightly and certainly we will pay dearly for it. Lot’s wife did it and we know her story. God cannot be mocked. Follow His instruction carefully and you will certainly benefit from it at the end.
Food for Thought: It takes a humble heart to obey God’s command.
Memory verse: 2 Kings 5:14
Prayer: O Lord, as I obey your commandments, answer my prayers and bless me.

Ignorance Hinders Blessing: Devotion for Thursday June 11, 2020

MY DAILY COVENANT WITH GOD DEVOTIONAL
Devotion for Thursday June 11, 2020
Topic: Ignorance Hinders Blessing
Text: 2 Kings 5:9 – 12
Elisha knew Naaman to be a proud man, and he would let him know, that before the great God all men stand upon the same level. Every commandment from God is always aimed at testing the spirit in us. Most times the spirit in us is usually rebellious to the laws of God. Thus denying us the blessings that would have followed total obedience.

Naaman, a great hero, was used to getting respect, and this time he didn’t get it and he was outraged when Elisha treated him like an ordinary person. This is usually expectations of those who are proud. They expect everybody to worship and honour them. As a proud man, he expected royal treatment. He was ignorant of the fact that God is no respecter of any person (Acts 10:34). Thus God’s instruction here was to humble him because a proud man has no place in God’s plan and purposes.
To wash in a great river would be one thing, but the Jordan was small and dirty. To wash in the Jordan, Naaman thought, was beneath a man of his position. But Naaman had to humble himself and obey Elisha’s commands in order to be healed.
Obedience to God begins with humility. We must believe that His way is better than our own. We may not always understand His ways of working, but by humbly obeying, we will receive His blessings. We must remember that; (1) God’s ways are the best,
(2) God wants our obedience more than anything else and
(3) God can use anything to accomplish His purposes.
Beloved, do not allow pride and ignorance to hinder your blessings. There is substitute to humility.
Food for Thought: Every commandment from God is always aimed at testing the spirit in us.
Memory verse: 2 Kings 5:12
Prayer: Almighty God, heal me of any atom of proud spirit in me. Grant me spirit of humility and obedience to your commandments in Jesus name.

A Prophet In Israel: Devotion for Wednesday June 10, 2020

MY DAILY COVENANT WITH GOD DEVOTIONAL
Devotion for Wednesday June 10, 2020
Topic: A Prophet In Israel
Text: 2 Kings 5:7 – 8
When Jehoram, the king of Israel got the letter sent by the king of Syria through Naaman, he tore his cloth, a way of expressing grief and despair. The writer of the letter Naaman brought does not mean it should be taken literally.
It may be that, since the letter was addressed to the king of Israel, Jehoram saw this as a potentially embarrassing situation for him politically. He well knew he could not heal Naaman and this might be seen as a political snub, leading to new hostilities.
Unfortunately, it didn’t occur to Jehoram that there are still prophets of God in the land of Israel because of the level of idol worship in the days of Ahab. This made Elisha to chide him. The language of Elisha here is not out of arrogance or pride but to chide kings of Syria and Israel.
Most times we undermine what we have. Some people are running from church to church, fellowship to fellowship in search of miracles undermining what they have in their church. They go to wrong places like the king of Syria and Naaman who went to the wrong place for miracle. If God could touch my life and I repented in the church where I am now, what else can’t that God give to me if I ask Him?
Jehoram didn’t know that there was a prophet in Israel. Do you know that there is a prophet in your church? God can use him to meet your need.
Food for Thought: Most people don’t know the value of what God has blessed them with until others start requesting for and making use of it.
Memory verse: 2 Kings 5:8
Prayer: Help me to value what I have, O Lord, before it eludes me.

What May I Do For You? Devotion for Thursday March 19, 2020

MY DAILY COVENANT WITH GOD DEVOTIONAL
Devotion for Thursday March 19, 2020
Topic: What May I Do For You?
Text: 2 Kings 2:9 – 12
Today’s topic is similar to that of Wednesday but what led to the question here is different. Elijah was about to be taken away by God and his faithful servant and some other prophets knew about this. While other prophets were comfortable with their position Elisha who was a mere servant wanted to step into his master’s shoes. He was determined to get something from Elijah before God takes him. It was his determination and persistence that made Elijah to ask the question in our text today.
There are lessons for us here.
1. When you have a need, be determined to find a solution to it in a godly way. Elisha was determined. All words of discouragement from Elijah and people did not deter him. He kept following. We should not be deterred by what people say. We should always keep our focus on God (Hebrews 12:2).
2. Elisha persisted and was focused. Most times after a session of prayers about our need, we give up. It ought not to be so. Jesus taught us about persistence in prayer in Luke 18:1ff. We shouldn’t easily give up. Keep on trying; your miracle is in the next attempt.
3. What Elisha asked for was in the will of God. He never asked for mansion, wealth or other worldly things rather he asked for what he will use to the glory of God and he got it at the end.
Most times our requests are mundane things. When we ask from God what pleases Him, He will always grant our requests.
Food for Thought: Elisha’s desire for a double portion of the spirit is not out of greed but that which will prepare him for usefulness and for glory of God.
Memory verse: Matthew 7:7
Prayer: Grant to me, O Lord, everything that will be useful for me to serve you and humanity in Jesus name.

The Call of Elisha: Devotion for Saturday January 18, 2020

MY DAILY COVENANT WITH GOD DEVOTIONAL
Devotion for Saturday January 18, 2020
Topic: The Call of Elisha Text: 1 Kings 19:19 – 21
Elijah found Elisha by Divine direction, not in the schools of the prophets, but in the field; not reading, or praying, or sacrificing, but ploughing the field. Idleness is no man's honour, nor is husbandry any man's disgrace. No wonder the saying that “There is dignity in labour.”
The cloak was the most important article of clothing a person could own. It was used as protection against the weather, as bedding, as a place to sit, and as luggage. It could be given as a pledge for a debt or torn into pieces to show grief. Elijah put his cloak on Elisha’s shoulders to show that he would become Elijah’s successor.
Throwing the mantle on Elisha may be a method of calling someone into an office of a prophet or servant for Elisha to have responded the way he did in verses 20 and 21. Later, when the transfer of authority was complete, Elijah left his cloak for Elisha (2 Kings 2:11-14).
By killing his oxen, Elisha made a strong commitment to follow Elijah. Without them, he could not return to his life as a wealthy farmer. This meal was more than a feast among farmers. It was an offering of thanks to the Lord who chose Elisha to be his prophet. Elisha didn’t waste time to follow Elijah. It was instantaneous. He destroyed what would have enticed him to go back into farming.
Have you parted with those things you were doing when God called you that can distract you from running the heavenly race well? If you have not done that, better do something about it now.
Food for Thought: Luke 5:11
Memory verse: Luke 9:61
Prayer: Lord, cut off anything that distracts me from running this heavenly race well in Jesus name.

What May I Do For You

Devotion for Tuesday June 19, 2018
Sing Sacred Songs & Solos 319; Abu 249
Topic: What May I Do For You?
Text: 2 Kings 2:9 – 12
Today’s topic is similar to that of yesterday but what led to the question here is different. Elijah was about to be taken away by God and his faithful servant and some other prophets knew about this. While other prophets were comfortable with their position Elisha who was a mere servant wanted to step into his master’s shoes. He was determined to get divine endowment from Elijah before God takes him. It was his determination and persistence that made Elijah to ask the question that forms our text today.

3. What Elisha asked for was in the will of God. He never asked for mansion, wealth, position or other worldly things rather he asked for what he will use to the glory of God and he got it at last. Most times, our request during our fasting and prayers are mundane things. When we ask from God what pleases Him, He will grant our requests.
Food for Thought: Elisha’s desire for a double portion of the spirit in Elijah was not out of greed but that which will prepare him as instrument in the hands of God.
Memory verse: 2 Kings 2:9
Prayer: Grant to me, O Lord, everything that will be useful for me to serve you and humanity in Jesus name.

The Danger In Doubting God's Word

MY DAILY COVENANT WITH GOD DEVOTIONAL
Devotion for Sunday May 28, 2017
Topic: The Danger In Doubting God’s Word
Text: 2 Kings 7:1 – 2
When Angel Gabriel gave God’s message to Zachariah that his wife Elizabeth will give birth to a son they will call John, he doubted the message because he and his wife were aged, and he was punished. God did not spare him because he was a priest. He became dumb till God fulfilled what he doubted (Luke 1:18–20; 1:62–64). Doubt and faithlessness has consequences on our lives as they deny us most of the good things that should have come our way.
The statement of the officer in our text was an expression of unbelief, for which Elisha immediately announced that he should be excluded from a share in the coming plenty. It is unlikely that this prediction will be fulfilled, that the officer thought God must pour out wheat and barley from heaven before it could have a literal accomplishment. The way this man was cut off from this blessing is the most unfortunate thing that can happen to any man. He saw but didn’t partake of it.
Do you doubt God’s promises about getting married, getting a good job, admission, children, etc? Repent today before God will punish you for doubting. Rom. 4:17–22 is clear evidence that Abraham did not waver in faith. Trust God as Abraham did. There are many requests we make and fail to receive the answer not because God is not willing to answer us but because of our doubt and unbelief. No wonder the opinion of James in James 1:6. Doubt can bring fear and make us undermine the potentials in us. Again, we should be mindful of saying negative things about ourselves and others as words are living being.
Food for Thought: Our doubts are traitors and make us lose the good we might win by fearing to attempt – William Shakespeare.
Memory verse: 2 Kings 7 verse 2b

Prayer: God, remove fear and doubt in me, and strengthen my faith in Jesus name.

Consequences Of Famine

MY DAILY COVENANT WITH GOD DEVOTIONAL
Devotion for Friday May 26, 2017
Topic: Consequences Of Famine
Text: 2 Kings 6:29
In June 2016, I read a story of how a woman used her child as a surety to get garri (a staple food in Nigeria made from cassava) from a trader in Osun state, Nigeria because she is being owe 7 months’ salary. This is the level people can be desperate to get food in time of crises.
The famine that led to our text was the greatest and worst famine in the history of Israel. It was so severe that people were killing and eating their children. This came as a result of God’s judgment. When we deliberately commit sin, God punishes us and it is usually very severe. Many things can lead to famine – sin, disobedience, for divine purpose, natural disaster like drought and invasion of an area by locust, etc. From what happened in the following verses, it seems the famine was pronounced by Elisha (2 Kings 6:30 – 31).
When the famine came to the level of people eating their children, Elisha went to the Lord and He spoke to him (2 Kings 7:1ff). When we come to crossroad on issues that confuse us, we should go to God for He has solutions to our problems. Elisha knew God was the source of all solution that defies all human wisdom. What would have led to the agreement to kill their children? Indeed, Moses foretold that this very evil shall come upon them if they forsake God (Deut. 28:53 & 57). This evil also came upon them when Nebuchadnezzar besieged Israel (Ezek. 5:10). Killing and eating of fellow human being as one of the consequences of famine is inhuman and against God’s commandment. Let us avoid whatsoever will bring famine by carefully obeying God.
Food for Thought: Sin and disobedience has grievous consequences
Memory verse: 2 Kings 6 verse 29
Prayer: God, remove anything that will bring famine and its consequences in my life and family.

CONSEQUENCES OF GREED: Devotion for Friday June 3, 2016

Text: 2 Kings 5:20 – 27                  Memory verse: v 27

OBEDIENCE LEADS TO MIRACLES: Devotion for Thursday June 2, 2016

OBEDIENCE LEADS TO MIRACLES: Devotion for Thursday June 2, 2016

Text: 2 Kings 5:13 – 19      Memory verse: v 14

IGNORANCE HINDERS BLESSING: Devotion for Wednesday June 1, 2016

Text: 2 Kings 5:9 – 12    Memory verse: v 12

Elisha knew Naaman to be a proud man, and he would let him know, that before the great God, all men stand upon the same level. Every commandment from God is always aimed at testing the spirit in us. THE CALL OF ELISHA: Devotion for Monday January 18, 2016

THE CALL OF ELISHA                 Monday January 18, 2016

Text: 1 Kings 19:19 – 21             Memory verse: v 21

Elijah found Elisha by Divine direction, not in the schools of the prophets, but in the field; not reading, or praying, or sacrificing, but ploughing. Idleness doesn’t bring honour and husbandry isn’t a disgrace. No wonder the saying that “There is dignity in labour” and that dusty hand leads to oily mouth.

THE OIL CEASED

THE OIL CEASED              Wednesday July 1, 2015

Text: 2 Kings 4:1 – 7            Memory verse: v 6

In accordance with the words of Elisha, the woman and her sons collected jars from their neighbors, pouring olive oil into them from their one flask. The olive oil was used for cooking, for lamps, and for fuel. The oil stopped flowing only when they ran out of containers. The number of jars they gathered was an indication of their faith. God’s provision was as large as their faith and willingness to obey. Beware of limiting God’s blessings by lack of faith and obedience. God is able to do immeasurably more than all we ask or imagine (Ephesians 3:20).

While there was a vessel to fill, there was oil sufficient; and it only ceased to flow when there was no vessel to receive it. This is an emblem of God’s grace. If we find in any place or at any time that the oil ceases to flow, it is because there are no empty vessels there, no souls hungering and thirsting for righteousness. As you start this month, you should create a heart that longs after God’s righteousness and your oil will never cease. God is willing to pour on us His blessings as we empty ourselves of our sins, pride and self. Are you ready for that? We wish you a month of ever flowing blessings from God.

Action: What can you do to sustain the inflow of God’s blessing into your life?

Prayer: Lord, help me to empty myself of every hindrance to your blessings.

OMNIPRESENT GOD

OMNIPRESENT GOD        Tuesday June 30, 2014

Text: Ezekiel 35:10 – 15       Memory verse: v 10

Idumeans (Edomites) were planning how to overrun Judah and Israel but the Lord God Almighty was there. This verse 10 is an encouragement never to worry about the plans of the enemies against us because for every plan the enemies make, the Lord is always there. He will either thwart the plan or wait for the appropriate time to act. This reminds us about Elisha and the king of Syria, whose war plans and strategies God reveals to Elisha (2 Kings 6:8 – 17).

We have here the record of the sins of the Edomites and their bad conduct towards the people of God. They thought of conquering and possessing Judah and Israel; and they would have succeeded, but only the Lord was there; and this spoiled their plans, and blasted their hopes. Every plan your enemies are making will attract God who will spoil their plans and blast their hopes in Jesus name. Let us note that, no plan your enemies have made or will make that God is not aware of.

Are you apprehensive of what the enemies have planned? Are you now panicking that they are about to consume you? You shouldn’t worry yourself because your Father was there when they were planning. You don’t even know what He has said about the matter; maybe what He said is in Isaiah 41:11 – 16 and 54:15. When we hear anything the enemies have planned, we should ask God because He was there when they planned and will never keep quite to allow their plans prevail.

Food for Thought: Isaiah 54:15

Prayer: God, when enemies gather against me, frustrate them in Jesus name.

Awake From Sleep: Devotion for Friday October 9, 2020

MY DAILY COVENANT WITH GOD DEVOTIONAL Devotion for Friday October 9, 2020 Topic: Awake From Sleep                                Text...
