Making Wrong Choice in Marriage: Devotion for Sunday April 19, 2020

MY DAILY COVENANT WITH GOD DEVOTIONAL
Devotion for Sunday April 19, 2020
Text: Making Wrong Choice in Marriage
Text: 1 Kings 11:1 – 8
Many of us spend so much time in prayer asking for God’s blessings upon our lives but I wonder if we actually ask God for wisdom in managing these blessings when He gives them to us. Inability to manage God’s blessings can mar us.
The story of Solomon, a man of wisdom marrying 700 wives is an instance of depravity recorded in the Bible. The choice you make in life matters so much in what you finally become. Solomon made wrong choice in marriage simply because he felt he has fame and money therefore he can use them without discretion.
Biblical marriage is source of happiness in life and the neglect or violation of biblical marriage is a source of many of the most direful evils which most men are exposed to. Solomon was wrong by going for more than one wife, going to marry from other nations which God prohibited them from taking wives and adding 300 concubines.
This is how many people have made wrong choices in marriage by going for the hand of the women God didn’t keep for them. The strange women succeeded in introducing Solomon to their gods. These turned his heart from the Almighty God. Wrong choices in marriage can mar our relationship with God. Therefore, for those who are single, they should be careful on the decisions they make. Don’t go against God’s standard or else you will pay dearly for it.
Food for Thought: No man is wise enough by himself.
Memory verse: Deuteronomy 17:17
Prayer: Lord, grant unto the singles the wisdom to make right choices concerning their marriages in Jesus name.

Marriage Is Honourable: Devotion for Saturday March 7, 2020

MY DAILY COVENANT WITH GOD DEVOTIONAL
Devotion for Saturday March 7, 2020
Topic: Marriage Is Honourable
Text: Hebrew 13:1 - 4
In verses 1 – 3 of this chapter, the author gave commands for the social life and responsibilities of Christians. It went further to give command on private lives too (v4). Couples that are believers have a responsibility to give honour to their marriage, and remain faithful to each other no matter the circumstances that may follow after they have been joined. This would include promises to continually love each other mutually, to remain faithful in thought, attitude, and action, and to support and provide for each other. This book shows how best to do this – we should stay away from immoral behaviour and adultery which splits marriages.
God’s commands against immorality (given for people’s own good) have been in place for a very long time now (see Ex. 20:14, 17; Job 24:15-24; Prov. 5:15-23). Christians are to maintain high standards (Matthew 5:27-28). Marriage being honourable means being right, proper, and for ministers of the gospel as well as others.
As marriage is God's institution for the happiness of man and the prevention of fornication and other abominable vices, he who forbids or discourages it increases the temptations to fornication, and exposes himself to the just indignation of God. The writer of Hebrews makes the point that even if no consequences are seen right away, promiscuous people will incur God’s wrath and He will surely judge them.
Food for Thought: How honourable is your marriage (For those married)?
Memory verse: Colossians 3:5
Prayer: Ask God to help you remain faithful in your marriage. Pray also for those whose marriages are having problems.

Is Your Marriage Honourable?

Devotion for Wednesday June 6, 2018
Sing A&M 463; Abu 132
Topic: Is Your Marriage Honourable?
Text: Hebrew 13:4
The first 3 verses of this chapter stipulate what the social life and responsibilities of Christians should be. It went further to give command on private lives too (v4). Christian couples have the responsibility to give honour to their marriage, and remain faithful to one another in it due to the vows they made before God. This would include promises to continually love one another mutually, to remain faithful in thought, attitude, and action, and to support and provide for each other. Hebrews shows how best to do these – we should stay away from immoral behavior and adultery. Immorality and adultery have split marriages for thousands of years. God’s commands against immorality (given for people’s own good) have been in place for a very long time now (see Exodus 20:14, 17; Job 24:15-24; Proverbs 5:15-23). Hebrews makes the point that even if no consequences are seen right away, promiscuous people will incur God’s wrath and He will surely judge them.
Food for Thought: How faithful are you in your marriage?
Memory verse: 13:4
Prayer: Pray for all couples that they will remain faithful in their marriages especially those whose marriages are having problems.

God’s Love For The Unfaithful: Devotion for Wednesday October 12, 2016

God’s Love For The Unfaithful: Devotion for Wednesday October 12, 2016
Text: Hosea 2:13 – 23         Memory verse: Hosea 2 verse 19
In the book of Isaiah chapter five, we have God’s lamentation of unfruitfulness of His vineyard, Israel. The nation of Israel is not only unfruitful but also unfaithful to God. The unfaithfulness of Israel to God is the central message of the book of Hosea. The book of Hosea is a love story, which is true, real and tragic, used to describe Israel and God. It tells of God’s love for His people and their response to Him.
In our text for today’s bible reading, is a marriage engagement from God to His loved one Israel. He had shown them righteousness, justice, unfailing love and compassion, not minding her unfaithfulness. Unfortunately, the Israelis failed God in all ramifications. They were easily enticed by the ungodly lifestyle of their neighbours who worship idols especially Baal. This action attracted God’s anger (Ezek. 15:8). The attraction to the worship of Baal started before they settled in the Promised Land. You can recall how Aaron made the golden calf in the wilderness to reflect the gods some other nations worship. Idolatry had been a long time problem with the nation Israel.
Ironically, all efforts made by God to draw them back seem fruitless. However, He was not willing to let His chosen ones go like that hence this message from Hosea. Today, many of us have been unfaithful to God in many areas of our lives and relationship with Him. Don’t just jump to conclusion that you are not. Rather, search your conscience and find out the areas you have been unfaithful and repent of them. Remember what 1 Jn. 1:8 says. God’s decision here is a challenge for us Christians who will not want to forgive our enemies. Do we show compassion to those who are unfaithful to us? We should be considerate and compassionate on all who ‘offend’ us and love them. We are called to be like God (1 John 3:1 & 2). God forgives us not by our own merit but by His grace (Romans 5:8 & Galatians 2:5). Are you will to accept that forgiveness He is offering you today?
Food for Thought: How faithful are you to God as required in the New Covenant with Him?

Prayer: Almighty God and my Father, help me to be faithful always to you in all things in Jesus name.

SUBMIT TO ONE ANOTHER: Devotion for Wednesday August 31, 2016

SUBMIT TO ONE ANOTHER: Devotion for Wednesday August 31, 2016
Text: Ephesians 5:21 – 33         Memory verse: Ephesians 5:21
Submitting to another person is an often misunderstood concept. I witness a counseling of an intending couple. The priest counseling them laid so much emphasis on the woman submitting to the man as if the instruction was meant for the woman alone. In the real sense of submitting to one another, it means yielding cheerful obedience to proper authority, from regard to God, who established it.
Paul proceeded to expand on the matter by the mention of particular cases. When we submit to God, we become more willing to obey His command to submit to others, that is, to subordinate our rights to theirs. In a marriage relationship, both husband and wife are called to submit. For the wife, this means willingly following her husband’s leadership IN CHRIST. For the husband, it means putting aside his own interests in order to care for his wife. Submission is rarely a problem in homes where both partners have a strong relationship with Christ and where each is concerned for the happiness of the other.
The love, Christ has for the church is an example Paul used in this case, which is sincere, pure, and constant, notwithstanding her failures. How sincere is your love for your spouse; your children, your parents, your subordinate, your boss, your neighbour, your colleagues, etc? Do you love them as you love yourself? We shouldn’t be so tenacious on our own will or opinion in matters indifferent, as to disturb the peace of the Church; the peace with our spouses, our neighbours, our colleagues, etc. Relationship thrives on the basis of give and take. In all such matters, give way to each other, and let love rule (Phil. 2:3). That is what Paul admonished us here to do in terms of submission.
Food for Thought: 1 Peter 5:5

Prayer: Lord, remove from me spirit of self and pride and grant me the grace to be submissive in all things lawful in Jesus name.

MAKING WRONG CHOICE IN MARRIAGE: Devotion for Friday April 15, 2016

MAKING WRONG CHOICE IN MARRIAGE: Devotion for Friday April 15, 2016

Text: 1 Kings 11:1 – 8     Memory verse: v 4

Many of us spend so much time in prayer asking for God’s blessings upon our lives but I wonder if we actually ask God for wisdom in managing these blessings when He releases them on us. This story of Solomon marrying 700 wives is an instance of depravity recorded in the Bible. The choice you make in life matters so much in what you finally become. Solomon made wrong choice in marriage simply because he felt he has fame and money therefore he can use them without discretion. According to Family Bible Notes, “The union for life of one man with one woman, according to the appointment of God, is essential to the highest excellence, usefulness, and happiness in life; and the neglect or violation of the original institution of marriage is a source of many of the most direful evils to which men on the earth are exposed.”

Solomon was wrong by going for more than one wife; going to marry from other nations which God prohibited the Israelites from taking wives and adding 300 concubines. This is how some people made wrong choices in marriage by going for the hand of the women God didn’t keep for them. The strange women succeeded in introducing Solomon to their gods. These turned his heart from God. Wrong choices in marriage can mar our relationship with God. Therefore, for those who are single, they should be careful on the decisions they make.
