No Excuse II

MY DAILY COVENANT WITH GOD DEVOTIONAL
Monday March 13, 2017
Topic: No Excuse II
Text: Revelation 2:8 – 11
Pain is part of life, be you a Christian or unbeliever. It is never easy to suffer, no matter the cause. Persecution is of Satan, not of God. He causes believers to be denied of their rights, thrown out of their homes, offices, and schools, thrown into prison and even are killed. Believers under persecution need not fear death, because they will be rewarded with the crown of life. Again, Satan may terminate our earthly lives, but not our spiritual lives.
In our scriptural reading for the day, God commended the church at Smyrna for the tribulation they endured, the poverty they have suffered and the blasphemy from some of the Jews there. God called them “Synagogue of Satan” because they were serving Satan’s purposes, not God’s, when they gathered to worship. He concluded by charging them not to fear what they will suffer even unto death but they should remain faithful to the end in order to be rewarded with crown of life. This is the only church out of the seven that was not rebuked by God. What they suffered during the writing of this letter and thereafter were enough for them to have given up their faith. They had enough reasons to do so but they didn’t do that. They were steadfast.
What is your reason to compromise and backslide from faith? If it is persecution, can you compare it with what the members of the church in Smyrna suffered? If you have been blasphemed, what of these people in Smyrna? Beware because you do not have any excuse (Romans 2:1) for compromising your faith.
Food for Thought: Revelation 3:9
Memory verse: Revelation 2 verse 9 - I know your tribulation and your poverty (but you are rich) and the slander of those who say that they are Jews and are not, but are a synagogue of Satan.
Prayer: God, as I come across blasphemers and persecutors grant me the grace never to compromise my faith in Jesus name.

Be An Observable Model (In Fellowship)

MY DAILY COVENANT WITH GOD DEVOTIONAL
Devotion for Monday February 6, 2017
Topic: Be An Observable Model (In Fellowship)
Text: 1 John 1:1 – 7
The believers devoting themselves to the apostles’ teaching (Acts 2:42) implies that they were continually persisting regularly in the activities of the apostles which included breaking of bread and teaching sessions. These activities form a practical map for not only the day-old church but for any church of any age. From the beginning the early church was devoted to hearing, studying, and learning what the apostles had to teach. Such coming together of believers is usually referred to as fellowship.
The fellowship (koinonia) means association and close relationships. This involved sharing goods, having meals together, and praying together. Sharing in the Lord’s Supper refers to communion services that were celebrated in remembrance of Jesus and patterned after the Last Supper, which Jesus had eaten with His disciples before His death (Matt 26:26-29). It likely included a regular meal shared together (Acts 2:46; 20:7; 1 Cor. 10:16; 11:23-25; Jude 1:12). Prayer is joined with the expression “sharing in the Lord’s Supper” to explain the word ‘fellowship.’ Prayer has always been a mark of the believers’ gatherings. How often do you attend fellowship of believers?
Do you see it as a delight coming together with other believers? In Ps 133:1, the Psalmist said, “Behold, how good and how pleasant it is for brethren to dwell together in unity!” This is what God expects from us. We should not neglect it. We should be a model with our regular attendance to church activities and programmes.
Food for Thought: Do you attend church programmes and activities regularly?
Memory verse: Acts 2:42 - And they devoted themselves to the apostles' teaching and the fellowship, to the breaking of bread and the prayers.
Prayer: Make me more regular to Church activities and programmes, O Lord my God in Jesus name. Amen

GOD OF EQUITY

DEVOTION FOR FRIDAY DECEMBER 2, 2016
Topic: GOD OF EQUITY
Text: Numbers 13:1 – 20        Memory verse: Numbers 13 verse 2
One of the greatest problems confronting us in our nation Nigeria is the issue of justice and equity. This problem is not similar to Nigeria alone. From what I read, United States of America adopted Electoral College as part of the process in choosing a President to ensure equity. God who called the nation Israel knew that equity is one way to ensure peace and progress. Thus in our scriptural reading, he ensured all the tribes were represented among the spies that went to search out the Promised Land.
The command to go and search out the Promised Land was not God’s original plan. He would have had the people go immediately forward under His all- sufficient guidance (Deuteronomy 1:20, 21) but when the people proposed first to search the land, God was pleased to permit the plan, and to give directions respecting the manner of executing it (Deuteronomy 1:22–23). Moses decided to get valuable information before the people could enter the Promised Land (Numbers 13:17 – 20), and he took careful steps to get that information. God, being God of equity instructed that there should be equity in choosing the spies. When you are making decisions or assuming new responsibilities, remember these two important steps. Ask yourself what you need to know about the opportunity, and then obtain that knowledge. Common sense is a valuable aid in accomplishing God’s purposes.
From the instruction God gave, it show His fair dealing with us. He didn’t allow only few tribes to do the spying no matter their population. Every tribe was represented to ensure equity and fairness, and also balance judgment. This is the way He deals with all of us as Christians. He doesn’t favour some people because of their creed or race. This is a challenging example for our leaders in Nigeria with her peculiar nature of diverse tribes. There should not be any room to deny people their rights just because they are few in number. As leaders in various capacities; be it in the church, in government, in organizations, etc, we should not be selective in dealing with people rather we should maintain a fair playing ground for everyone to participate to avoid accusation that their rights are denied.
Food for Thought: God’s standard has remained same for every Christian no matter your creed or race.

Prayer: God, your standard remains the same for every believer. Grant me the grace to live by it and not to assume you will lower your standard in anyway.

THE HOLY SPIRIT AND THE BELIEVER: Devotion for Monday September 5, 2016

THE HOLY SPIRIT AND THE BELIEVER: Devotion for Monday September 5, 2016
Text: John 14:25 – 27      Memory verse: John 14:26
Holy Spirit is the third person in the Trinity. According to Nicene Creed, He proceeds from the Father and the Son (John 14:26; John 15:26). Holy Spirit is a person and not a dove or olive oil. Some ministers even use it for Holy Spirit when they are ministering. You will hear them say, Receive it. He is a person and He is equal with the Father and the Son. In Baptism, we use the three equally (Matthew 28:19) when we say I baptize you in the name of God the Father, God the Son and God the Holy Spirit. When we say the Apostolic benediction (the grace), we use the three also. He has the attributes of God the Father (Romans 8:14; 1 Corinthians 2:10; 1 Corinthians 16:19). Therefore, He should be worshipped the way we worship God the Father or God the Son.
Our text shows us one of the works of the Holy Spirit in the life of a believer in John 14:26. The works of the Holy Spirit in the life of a believer include;
1) He teaches us – John 14:26
2) He empowers us – Acts 1:18
3) He counsels, comforts and guides us – John 16:7
4) He guarantees our salvation – Ephesians 1:14
5) He helps us to bear good fruits – Galatians 5: 22 & 23.
We should understand that as believers, the power of God comes into us immediately we accept Jesus as Lord and Saviour (John 1:12). It is from that moment that the Holy Spirit will begin to influence our lives until we allow Him full control of our lives. Speaking in tongues is not the only sign to know if the Holy Spirit is in us. It is the fruit we bear (Galatians 522 & 23). Is the Holy Spirit in control of your life or you are still living in the flesh?
Food for Thought: As a Christian, is your life controlled by the Holy Spirit?
Prayer: Take control of my life, Holy Spirit, as I surrender to you this day in Jesus name.
