At Calvary, They Crucified Him: Devotion for Good Friday April 10, 2020

MY DAILY COVENANT WITH GOD DEVOTIONAL
Devotion for Good Friday April 10, 2020
Topic: At Calvary They Crucified Him
Text: Luke 23:32 – 49
Luke called the place where Jesus was crucified, Calvary while the other 3 Evangelists say it is “Place of Skull called Golgotha” in Hebrew (Matthew 27:33; Mark 15:22 & John 19:17).
Calvary is a hill just outside the city walls of Jerusalem where the Crucifixion of Jesus Christ took place. Why the choice of Calvary? The Chief Priest and Romans soldiers choose the place which was conspicuous so as to make mockery of Jesus but they never knew it was symbolic. See Hebrews 13:11, 12 and compare it with these passages Ex. 29:14; Lev. 4:11 – 12, 21; 6:30 and Num. 19:3.
He was crucified there because He was bearing the sins of the world just like the lamb in the Old Testament bearing sin is burnt outside the camp.

To show what He came to do at Calvary, the first thing was to plea for forgiveness of those who crucified Him. With His death He purchase and procured for us forgiveness of sin. He also pardoned one of the criminals right there at Calvary. This shows that true repentance is never late. But we should not procrastinate about it because we may not have the grace this criminal enjoyed.
As the soldiers taunted Him, He was humble and didn’t retaliate (1 Pet 2:21 – 24). His death was recorded in v 46 while the reaction of the Centurion to His death is in v 47.
Having died for us, we should seek to glorify God with true repentance and conversion; by a sober, righteous, and godly life; and by employing our talents in the service of Him who died for us and rose again.
Food for Thought: Christ became accursed for us upon the cross. What have you done to reciprocate this sacrifice?
Memory verse: Luke 23:33
Prayer: God may this ultimate sacrifice made for me not be in vain.

AT CALVARY: Devotion for Good Friday March 25, 2016

AT CALVARY: Devotion for Good Friday March 25, 2016

Text: Luke 23:32 – 49    Memory verse: v 33

Luke called the place where Jesus was crucified, Calvary while the other three evangelists called it, Place of Skull or Golgotha in Hebrew (Matt. 27:33; Mk. 15:22 & Jn. 19:17). Calvary is a hill just outside the city walls of Jerusalem where the Crucifixion of Jesus Christ took place. Why the choice of Calvary? He was crucified there because bearing the sins of the world (just like the lamb in the Old Testament bearing sin) is burnt outside the camp.

The first thing Jesus did at Calvary was to plea for forgiveness of those who were crucifying Him, an evidence of His mission on earth. Another thing He did was to purchase and procure for us, forgiveness of sins. He also pardoned one of the criminals right there, a proof that true repentance is never late. But we should not procrastinate about it because we may not have the grace this criminal enjoyed. As the soldiers taunted Him, He was humble and didn’t retaliate (1 Pet 2:21–24). THEY PRAISED GOD

THEY PRAISED GOD           Monday May 18, 2015

Text: Luke 2:15 – 20              Memory verse: v 20

When Jesus was born, some shepherds were among the first people that got the good news of His birth. One would have expected the news to have gone to the Chief Priest or the Pharisees but God chose simple men who will value His birth (Luke 2:8 – 15). They did not make argument with the angel. The message prompted them to leave their sheep and went down to Bethlehem. They came and saw (2:16) just as the angel had told them (2:17). They were indeed privileged to have seen all these. They saw the act as the grace of God. As they were returning to care for their flocks, they glorified God for what He had shown them, and for the blessedness which they felt.

There is always joy when a child is born into any home. However, the birth of Jesus was a special case and the joy and emotion expressed by these simple hearts were not just because a child was born, rather because they have seen the Messiah that has been spoken of, and also the privilege of being among the first set to do so. Do you praise God when he gives you a rare privilege? How do you react when you are privileged to hear the truth – frown at the messenger or you take it seriously? The honour these shepherd had, came out of their obedience. Obedience is the best proof of our love for God.

Food for Thought: We can only be privileged to God’s goodness when we obey his instructions and commandments.

Prayer: Grant me the heart of obedience to your word O Lord which is the major source of blessings.
