What Is Your Servant? Devotion for Saturday January 25, 2020

MY DAILY COVENANT WITH GOD DEVOTIONAL
Devotion for Saturday January 25, 2020
Topic: What Is Your Servant?
Text: 2 Samuel 9:8
Family Bible Notes posited that “A conviction of unworthiness, and true gratitude for favours, tend greatly to increase the liberality and usefulness of the giver, and also the happiness and benefit of the receiver.” This statement was true in the case of Mephibosheth. The way David treated him surprised him which led to the topic of the day. His treatment of Mephibosheth shows David’s integrity as a leader who accepted his obligation to show love and mercy. His generous provision for Jonathan’s son goes beyond any political benefit he might have received and that humbled Mephibosheth.
It is good to have a humble heart under undeserved Providences. This is applicable to our salvation too. We deserved death by virtue of our sins but God in His love and mercies came and died for us. This should make us humble in whatever position we find ourselves. This led to the statements Paul made in 1 Corinthians 15:9 and Ephesians 3:8. Mephibosheth use the phrase, a servant and dead dog not because he was crippled but because he saw himself as a despised person who was not worthy of such honour. Do you have a humbled heart? How do you feel about the gifts God has bestowed on you? A thankful heart is the greatest virtue.
Food for Thought: The worship most acceptable to God comes from a thankful and cheerful heart.
Memory verse: 2 Samuel 9:8
Prayer: Lord God, grant me a thankful heart to always appreciate my salvation and works of mercies you do in my life.

Meekness: A Divine Virtue

MY DAILY COVENANT WITH GOD DEVOTIONAL
Devotion for Tuesday May 9, 2017
Topic: Meekness: A Divine Virtue
Text: 2 Samuel 16:11
It takes a man who knows God to be meek and gentle. Such a man does not become angry easily and he is never proud. The meek enjoys the goodness of God and is always shielded from evil. Matt 5:5 says “Blessed are the meek, for they shall inherit the earth.” If you desire to enjoy the goodness of this earth and unparalleled favour from God, you should imbibe into your life meekness and gentleness, and avoid anger (Prov. 19:11). David was running away from his son Absalom after a mutiny. At Bahurim, Shimei one of Saul’s kindred started cursing him (2 Sam 16:5 – 8). This angered Abishai who sought for permission to kill him for openly confronting and cursing King David. However, David being a meek man made the statement in our text. He saw what he was passing through as something God might have ordered because he sees himself as a sinner.
This act of David is a challenge for every one of us who wants to live righteously and make heaven especially in this age when prayer of some Christians is the death of their enemies. He was not offended rather he surrendered everything to God. This should be our standard as Christians. Do we not react harshly against people? What a world we will have if all the Christians should emulate David’s reaction here? Even Jesus challenged us in Matt 11:29. God lives in midst of meek and humble (Zeph. 3:12). Let all your actions and works be guided by what James said in Jas 3:13. As you show meekness and humility, God will fight for you as He did for David.
Food for Thought: Proverbs 16:32
Memory verse: 2 Samuel 16 verse 11
Prayer: O God, grant me the spirit of meekness and humility, and help me to put off anger totally from my life.

IT BROUGHT BLESSINGS TO HIS HOUSE: Devotion for Monday August 3, 2015

IT BROUGHT BLESSINGS TO HIS HOUSE

Text: 1 Chronicles 13:14                          Memory verse: v 14

One would have expected Obed-Edom to refuse housing the Ark of Covenant after the unfortunate incident that took Uzza’s life but he could not disobey the King’s order. The order from a king is always obeyed whether it is convenient or not. He accepted it in good faith. His action was like the submission of Mary to God's message through Angel Gabriel (Luke 1:38). Obed-Edom may also have warned his family about the Ark of Covenant, which made the entire family to enjoy God's blessings and peace within the period that Ark was there. It is the duty of Husbands and Fathers to teach their families obedience and reverence to God and all that belongs to Him.  The reverence Obed-Edom and his family had on the Ark of Covenant brought blessings to them. God blessed him and all he had because of the Ark which stayed there for just 3 months.

Sometimes we focus only on the blessings God gives us, while forgetting that when we sin, God punishes us (Hebrews 10:31). At other times, however, we concentrate so much on judgment that we miss His blessings. Don’t fall into a one-sided view of God. Along with God’s blessings comes the responsibility to live up to his demands for fairness, honesty, and justice. Let this be your watchword this day, this month and always in Jesus name.

Food for Thought: Do you reverence Holy Things of God?

Prayer: Grant me the wisdom to do things that will bring blessings to me.
