GREAT AND PRECIOUS PROMISES: Devotion for Sunday March 22, 2015
Text: 2 Peter 1:1 – 4 Memory verse: v 4
The
promises of God for us are great and precious treasure and they come at His
discretion alone. It implies, (1) that it is in his power alone; (2) that he
may bestow it or not, as he pleases; (3) that we cannot infer from any process
of reasoning that it is his purpose to bestow it on us; (4) that it is a favour
which we can obtain only from him, and not by any independent effort of our
own. The promises are those which pertain to salvation. Peter called them "exceeding great and precious."
By our salvation, God has given to us all things that are conducive for our
present and future happiness; and they make us partakers of the divine nature. God
made these promises so we can be like Him and to escape the corruption that is
in the world through lust.
This
world is full of corruption, sin, and temptation; by reason of our lust. The
only way to escape the corruption, sin, and temptation of this world is by
being made partakers of the divine nature, through the influence of the
promises. Do these promises inspire and motivate you to partake of his divine
nature? See 1 Corinthians 2:9 (compare Isaiah 64:4).
Food for Thought: “The sacred promises, though in
themselves most sure and precious, are of no avail for the comfort and
sustenance of the soul unless you grasp them by faith, plead them in prayer,
expect them by hope, and receive them with gratitude” – Charles Spurgeon.
Prayer: Stir up your spirit in me O Lord, through the
knowledge of your promises so it will challenge me to be a partaker of your
divine nature.
