HIS PROMISES ARE SURE: Devotion for Friday October 21, 2016

HIS PROMISES ARE SURE: Devotion for Friday October 21, 2016
Text: 2 Corinthians 1:20 – 24     Memory verse: 2 Corinthians 1 verse 20
In the lives of some bible characters, we have seen that the things God promised them were fulfilled. He promised to save Noah during the deluge if he builds an ark He did it. His promise to bless Abraham, Isaac, Jacob, Joseph, down to the Apostles all came to pass. For this reason, Apostle Paul in this letter to the Christians in Corinth admonishes them to remain faithful and focused as they await God’s promises which are sure.
We have some lessons in our bible reading for the day.
1. That God has made many promises to His people. God made many promises but of great importance and value is the promise of eternal life. Can you mention five promises God has made to us as Christians?
2. That all the promises which God has made to His people, are made in Christ, and ratified by Him. In all the promises of God to His people, Christ acts the part and office of a surety; He undertakes and engages for God, that all which He has promised shall be made good to us.
3. That the promises made by God, and ratified and confirmed in Christ, do all tend to the glory of God. This is what present Christians should understand. God didn’t promise anything that will not glorify Him.
Paul gave the reason for his desired trip to Corinth; to bring joy (1:24). He didn’t want to visit them only to rebuke them severely (1:23). Just as the Corinthians could trust God to keep His promises, they could trust Paul as God’s ambassador to keep his. He would still visit them, but at a better time. All of God’s promises of what the Messiah would be like are fulfilled in Christ.
Jesus was completely faithful in His ministry; He never sinned (1 Pet. 3:18); He faithfully died for us (Heb 2:9); and now He faithfully intercedes for us (Rom 8:34; Heb 4:14-15). Because Jesus Christ is faithful, Paul worked to be faithful in his ministry and so we are expected to be faithful too. How faithful are you in your call as a Christian?
Food for Thought: Do you know your worth in the eyes of God as a Christian?
Prayer: Almighty God, the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, make me faithful as I live my life with your promises in view in the name of Jesus Christ our Lord.

BOUGHT WITH A PRICE: Devotion for Thursday October 20, 2016

BOUGHT WITH A PRICE: Devotion for Thursday October 20, 2016
Text: 1 Corinthians 6: 12 – 20    Memory verse: 1 Corinthians 6 verse 20
Yesterday, we read how Paul asserted that people who say they are Christians but are still living in sin will not be part in the Kingdom of God. We summed up by saying that Christians must not willfully commit sin or condone it in any way. His stand according to yesterday’s devotion is that we cannot be selective about the sin we condemn or excuse. God expects His followers in any age to have high moral standards.
In our bible reading for the day, the Apostle continues his admonition by stressing the importance of living a life of purity and righteousness. He gave instances of how we can defile ourselves especially through immorality. The reason he was so particular about immorality is in 1 Corinthians 6:18 and 19. Christians should take this admonition is very seriously because as they are no longer the owners of their bodies.
Now, our bodies belong to God and should be honoured and exclusively be used to glorify Him. We can do this by absolute obedience to God (1 Corinthians 6:19). Paul stressed this because we have been bought with a price (1 Corinthians 6:20). The price with which Jesus Christ bought us is stated in Matt 20:28; Galatians 3:13 and 1 Peter 18, 19. The precious blood of Jesus Christ is not what we should take for granted and abuse it. We should consider the sacrifice Jesus Christ made and take our call and faith seriously.
Beloved, since our bodies belong to God, it is our duty to glorify God with them. The fact that we are His, purchased and now belong to His spiritual temple makes our obligation to consecrate our spirit and body to His service imperative. Unfortunately, some Christians today who belong to the permissive group don’t see anything wrong in this. They hold the view that we can live in the world and do whatever we like in the name of freedom. It ought not to be so. We need the grace of God to fulfill our obligation of consecrating our lives to God and we can only succeed if we apply the counsel of Paul in Romans 12:1–2. To present the body to God as a living sacrifice is to consecrate it, with the living soul that inhibits it, to God's service.
Food for Thought: Act 20:28
Prayer: God, grant me the understanding that I have been bought with a precious price so that I will live my life to conform to the standard expected of me in Jesus name. Amen.

DON’T BE DECEIVED: Devotion for Wednesday October 19, 2016

DON’T BE DECEIVED: Devotion for Wednesday October 19, 2016
Text: 1 Corinthians 6:9 – 11    Memory verse: 1 Corinthians 6 verse 9
The Christian life starts when we realise that we have been living in sin and decides to change. The person accepts the sacrifice of Jesus Christ on then Cross of Calvary making Him Lord and Saviour. Such experience is being born again. Such person is expected to severe his or her life from sin. The desire and appetite to sin should die in that person. Such deviation from sin distinguishes such as a Christian. If such person continues to romance sin, his or salvation becomes doubtful and if it continues, it becomes certain that such person is not a true believer.
Here in our scriptural reading, Paul describes the characteristics of unbelievers and asserts that people still living in sin cannot inherit the kingdom of God. Christians came out of all kinds of different backgrounds, including those mentioned in Ephesians 6:9 and 10. They may still struggle with evil desires, but they should not continue in these practices doing it willfully. Any Christian who says he is a follower of Jesus Christ but allows every kind of evil to permeate his lives is not a worthy Christian. People in that category will not share in the Kingdom because they persisted in their evil practices with no sign of remorse. Such people, if they think they are believers, need to reevaluate their lives to see if they truly believe in Christ. They shouldn’t be deceived by thinking that they will be saved because they attend church services, programmes and activities.
Our society today is a permissive type where some Pastors and Christians overlook or tolerate some immoral behaviour (greed, drunkenness, etc.) while remaining outraged at others (homosexuality, thievery, etc.). Christians must not participate in sin or condone it in any way; we cannot be selective about the sin we condemn or excuse. God expects His followers in any age to have high moral standards. What is your moral standard? We shouldn’t make the mistake of thinking that any unrighteous man shall inherit the Kingdom of God. Don’t flatter yourself by thinking God will compromise His standard. He is a just God.
Food for Thought: Ephesians 5:3–5
Prayer: Help me, O Lord, to steer clear of all unrighteousness so I will be an inheritor of your kingdom in Jesus name.

WHY NOT ACCEPT WRONG? Devotion for Tuesday October 18, 2016

WHY NOT ACCEPT WRONG? Devotion for Tuesday October 18, 2016
Text: 1 Corinthians 6:1 – 7     Memory verse: 1 Corinthians 6 verse 7
The greatest desire of Jesus Christ concerning His disciples is unity. He prayed earnestly about it. In the New Commandment He gave to His disciples, He charged them to love one another. This shows His desire for His church. This notwithstanding, there are bound to be misunderstanding where more than one person meets. This led to the problem Paul addressed in this First Epistle to the Corinthians.
Paul’s opinion about disputes between Christians is that such cases shouldn’t be filed in a lawsuit. This is in every aspect the standard that Christians should adopt.  He suggested that disputes between Christians should be handled by qualified Christian leaders in the church. This is so because Christians are seen as brothers and sisters. If that be the case, why should people of same family go outside to settle disputes?
Some other reasons Paul had against secular court settling disputes between Christians because (1) if the judge and jury were not Christians, they would not likely be sensitive to Christian values and standards. (2) The basis for going to court is often revenge; this should never be a Christian’s motive. (3) Lawsuits make the church look bad, causing unbelievers to focus on church problems rather than on its purpose. Above all, Paul’s position was that the best thing a Christian should do is to accept wrong for the sake of peace which ordinarily is the emblem of Christianity.
That these Corinthian Christians had to resort to lawsuits to settle disputes among them was a worldly act and condemnable. It showed that they were still immature in their Christian faith. Paul explained the direction in which they needed to grow; they needed to willingly accept injustice if that would mean protecting the church from abuse and scandal.
Beloved, you should not wrong and defrauded someone especially fellow Christians for any reason at all in the first place. Mature believers would not act in that manner. Such act of defraud is peculiar to unbelievers and non Christians.  A matured Christian should be willing to turn the other cheek when wronged (Matt 5:39) as Jesus taught us. How matured are you in the things of faith? Will you be willing to turn the other cheek?
Food for Thought: Romans 12:17 – 19
Prayer: Almighty God and my Father in heaven, grant me the grace to grow unto maturity in this Christian race.

EFFECTS OF WISDOM: Devotion for Monday October 17, 2016

EFFECTS OF WISDOM: Devotion for Monday October 17, 2016
Text: Proverbs 2:10 – 22    Memory verse: Proverbs 2 verses 10 and 11
Yesterday we read gains from heavenly wisdom. We saw that wisdom is divine and God gives it to those who consistently and concertedly seek for it. Because of its great value, not everyone is ready to pay the price to acquire wisdom. Today’s bible reading highlights more of what we stand to the gain from heavenly wisdom.
Heavenly wisdom will deliver one from the ways of evil men (Proverbs 2:10–15). This implies that with wisdom, someone can know the best way to approach or handle evil men. Such person cannot be enticed into doing evil with them. Wisdom will enable him to know when to flee from their cunning and deceitful ways. Wisdom is very important in a time like this when people are so much evil minded and wicked.
Any Christian, who is truly wise, should be very careful to avoid all evil company and evil practices which can lure us out of our Christian faith. When wisdom has control over our lives, then, it not only fills our heads, but enters into our hearts, and will protect, and preserve, both against corruptions within us and temptations without.
Secondly, it will deliver men from adulterous women (2:16–19). The adulteress is referred to as a wayward woman in that she is outside the circle of a man’s proper relationships (Proverbs 2:16). When we have wisdom in our hearts, it will guard us against improper relationship.
Two of the most difficult sins man finds exceedingly hard to resist are pride and sexual immorality. Both are seductive. In combination, their appeal is deadly and can destroy someone overnight. We need heavenly wisdom to overcome them. In fact, Solomon’s opinion is that only by relying on God’s strength can we overcome them. Pride appeals to the empty head; sexual enticement to the empty heart. We should be extremely careful about what we take to heart. It is only by looking up to God, that we can fill our heads with His wisdom and our hearts with His love. Remember that you have a destination and a reward waiting for you. Therefore always ask God for wisdom and strength to resist these temptations.
Food for Thought: “The only effectual safeguard from the ways of sin and ruin is the knowledge and fear of God” – Family Bible Notes
Prayer: Heavenly Father, sow and nurture your knowledge and fear in my heart in Jesus name.

GAINS FROM HEAVENLY WISDOM: Devotion for Sunday October 16, 2016

GAINS FROM HEAVENLY WISDOM: Devotion for Sunday October 16, 2016
Text: Proverbs 2 verses 1 – 9   Memory verse: Proverbs 2 verse 6
God created us in His image and expects us to imitate Him through Jesus Christ who is His perfect image. Again, He expects us to depend on Him as our maker just as we read yesterday. In our bible reading for the day, Solomon spoke again as a wise teacher, describing the benefits of pursuing heavenly wisdom. He laid out the concept that God is the ultimate source of wisdom (Proverbs 2:6). True wisdom is God-given, not merely the result of human effort or ability (1 Kings 3:9–12; Jas 1:5). Obviously, there is no doubt about it that wisdom comes from God. Knowledge can come through human effort but wisdom is heavenly. This is the reason behind some acclaimed learned men and women who misbehaves despite their knowledge.
The core of the teaching from Solomon here is that if we truly give ourselves to the knowledge of God without hypocrisy, we will understand the fear of the Lord, and find the true knowledge of God (Proverbs 2:5) which will result in gaining heavenly wisdom. Gaining this true knowledge that leads to wisdom comes from concerted and consistent efforts (Proverbs 2:4) in seeking from God because it comes from Him. This wisdom will shield those who walk uprightly. With it, God will guard the paths of justice, and preserve the way of His saints. It will lead to proper understanding, righteousness, justice and equity. How are you striving to acquire this heavenly wisdom?
Beloved in Christ, it is pertinent to note here that there is difference between worldly wisdom and heavenly wisdom. Heavenly wisdom brings out heart knowledge that transforms us physically and spiritually, while worldly wisdom is mere head knowledge that criticizes everything spiritual. As it takes concerted and consistent effort to gain wisdom from God and one of the ways is through meditation of God’s word, how are you doing that? How serious do you take the word of God? Remember God’s counsel to Joshua (Joshua 1:8). Don’t just read to know what the bible says rather read to gain knowledge and wisdom that will transform your life and make you a worthy candidate for the Kingdom of God.
Food for Thought: Deuteronomy 17:18 and 19

Prayer: O Lord my God, as I seek heavenly wisdom through constant and consistent study of your word, grant it to me in Jesus name. Amen.

REGARD YOUR MAKER: Devotion for Saturday October 15, 2016

REGARD YOUR MAKER: Devotion for Saturday October 15, 2016
Text: 1 Chronicle 17:1 – 14     Memory verse: 1 Chronicle 17 verse 1
Any true Christian will not be contented with being blessed rather he will also want to do all he can for the honour of God and the good of mankind. What is statement means is that the person who is blessed will not be selfish with his blessing and will always acknowledge God as the source of his blessings. Such person will not want to rest until he uses his blessings to serve God and humanity. One reason God blesses us is to be a channel of blessing to others too.
David being at rest in his palace, considered how he might best employ his leisure and prosperity in the service of God. He formed a design to build a temple for the Ark of the Covenant. When he presented the idea to Nathan the prophet, initially he didn’t speak as a prophet who had received words from God, but as a godly man, encouraging David in his proposition to build a temple until God spoke otherwise (1 Chronicle 17:3–15).
What Nathan did was not wrong. Such encouragement is needed when we meet with people who have ideas on how best to promote Gods work. As Christians, we ought to do all we can to encourage and promote the good purposes and designs of others, and, as we have opportunity, to forward a good work. This is what promotes unity, love, peace and development in a society.
Have you been blessed by God and you feel unconcerned about the situation of your church? Are you blessed and you don’t consider doing anything for God, His Church, His servants, the needy and the less privileged in the society? God is saying to you today through Haggai; consider your ways (Haggai 1:7). A true Christian cannot be comfortable when God’s house is in ruins; when the church needs money for evangelism and mission.
Do you regard God who gave you the wealth you are enjoying now? Then do something to glorify Him. Do you think the peace you are enjoying is because you deserve it? They are all gift from God. Do something as a regard for God who has blessed you. I have seen individuals build churches. You can do similar thing too. You can support this production of this daily devotional. You will never lose your reward.
Food for Thought: Regard for God’s blessing is an appreciation for His grace upon us.
Prayer: Lord, help me not to be selfish with your blessings upon my life.

LIGHT MAKES THE DIFFERENCE: Devotion for Friday October 14, 2016

LIGHT MAKES THE DIFFERENCE: Devotion for Friday October 14, 2016
Text: Genesis 1:1 – 5       Memory verse: Genesis 1 verse 3
Light symbolises God, good, righteousness and godly living while darkness is a symbol of everything evil failure, backwardness, lack of progress in personal endeavours, etc. Jesus said, “I am the light of the world. He who follows me shall not walk in darkness, but have the light of life – John 8:12" and of His disciples, “You are the light of the world” Matt. 5:14. This means that He came into the world to give the world direction in this dark world of sin and evil. As for we, His disciples, we are to give direction to the world too. In our text, the bible recorded that God willed, decreed and appointed that there will be light (1:3) and it was so. There was result and darkness went away. Let every darkness around you leave in Jesus name.
Today, many are in darkness because of sin and ignorance. If you are among them, you need the light of God in your life. It is better you repent now before it will be too late. Family Bible Notes says, “God caused the light to shine out of darkness, and He can shine into dark hearts, and give them the light of the knowledge of His glory in the face of Jesus Christ, 2 Corinthians 4:6.” It is the light of God that brings progress, peace and unity in a family. It is what makes the difference in families and lives. Are you surrounded by darkness? God is saying let there be light in your life, your family, business and all you do. Allow the light of the word of God into your life.
Food for Thought: There is no darkness enough in the entire world to put out the light of one little candle” – Epitaph in PowerBible CD.

Prayer: God, remove darkness in my life and let your life shine in my life and family in Jesus name.

ARE YOU IN DOUBT? Devotion for Thursday October 13, 2016

ARE YOU IN DOUBT? Devotion for Thursday October 13, 2016

Text: Jeremiah 33:1 – 9       Memory verse: Jeremiah 33 verse 3

There are many things that can challenge our faith and make us question if the promises of God are real. It can only take a man of faith to endure the hardship, trials and even imprisonment without questioning God. An average Christian in a prison (33:1) for a long time simply because of his faith and commitment to God will surely ask if God and all His promises are real. The person will question the love God promised, the protection and deliverance He assured us.

This happens when we come to a cross road and are perplexed. When there seems to be no way out of seemly difficult problem and having fasted, and prayed without an answer, we will act like John the Baptist (Matt 11:2, 3). Before his imprisonment, he announced that Jesus Christ is the Lamb of God and the Messiah (John 1:29–36). Unfortunately, while in prison, he questioned the truth that Jesus Christ is the Messiah and had to send his disciples to inquire from Jesus Christ if He is the Messiah. What he saw and passed through led into such doubt. Again, he had a wrong understanding of Messiahship of Jesus Christ. However, in all our doubts, fears and apprehensions, God understands our plight when we come to crossroads.

God saw the ordeal Jeremiah was into and asked the prophet to call upon Him so He might clarify every fears, doubt and apprehensions, and reveal secret things to him. Are you in doubt if indeed God called you as a Christian, a missionary, a Pastor, etc? Are you in doubt if God was the one that gave you that spouse, job, sent you to that mission field, etc? Are you in doubt if your Christianity is real as things are not moving on well with you despite your commitment? It is time to call on God and He will answer and make it clear to you on why you are facing hard times in your call and ministry, and what you will gain by passing through it faithfully. He has reasons for everything happening to you.

Food for Thought: “Our doubts are traitors and make us lose the good we oft might win by fearing to attempt” – William Shakespeare

Prayer: Almighty God and my Father solve every problem that led me into doubting your love and reveal hidden things to me in Jesus name. Amen.

God’s Love For The Unfaithful: Devotion for Wednesday October 12, 2016

Gods Love For The Unfaithful: Devotion for Wednesday October 12, 2016
Text: Hosea 2:13 – 23         Memory verse: Hosea 2 verse 19
In the book of Isaiah chapter five, we have Gods lamentation of unfruitfulness of His vineyard, Israel. The nation of Israel is not only unfruitful but also unfaithful to God. The unfaithfulness of Israel to God is the central message of the book of Hosea. The book of Hosea is a love story, which is true, real and tragic, used to describe Israel and God. It tells of God’s love for His people and their response to Him.
In our text for todays bible reading, is a marriage engagement from God to His loved one Israel. He had shown them righteousness, justice, unfailing love and compassion, not minding her unfaithfulness. Unfortunately, the Israelis failed God in all ramifications. They were easily enticed by the ungodly lifestyle of their neighbours who worship idols especially Baal. This action attracted God’s anger (Ezek. 15:8). The attraction to the worship of Baal started before they settled in the Promised Land. You can recall how Aaron made the golden calf in the wilderness to reflect the gods some other nations worship. Idolatry had been a long time problem with the nation Israel.
Ironically, all efforts made by God to draw them back seem fruitless. However, He was not willing to let His chosen ones go like that hence this message from Hosea. Today, many of us have been unfaithful to God in many areas of our lives and relationship with Him. Don’t just jump to conclusion that you are not. Rather, search your conscience and find out the areas you have been unfaithful and repent of them. Remember what 1 Jn. 1:8 says. God’s decision here is a challenge for us Christians who will not want to forgive our enemies. Do we show compassion to those who are unfaithful to us? We should be considerate and compassionate on all who ‘offend’ us and love them. We are called to be like God (1 John 3:1 & 2). God forgives us not by our own merit but by His grace (Romans 5:8 & Galatians 2:5). Are you will to accept that forgiveness He is offering you today?
Food for Thought: How faithful are you to God as required in the New Covenant with Him?

Prayer: Almighty God and my Father, help me to be faithful always to you in all things in Jesus name.

OUR ALL-SATISFYING PORTION: Devotion for Tuesday October 11, 2016

OUR ALL-SATISFYING PORTION: Devotion for Tuesday October 11, 2016
Text: Psalm 16:1 – 7        Memory verse: Psalm 16 verse 6
Of what use will it be to God after blessing you to see those blessings being taken away from you either by devil or by his agents? Gods intent is never to bless us and we lose them to the devil. His intent is never to add any sorrow to the blessings He gives to us. No wonder the bible was clear and emphatic about this very truth that God’s blessings don’t add any sorrow to us (Proverbs 10:22). This should be a source of hope and courage in our work with God as we expect His provisions for our daily needs.
When God is your portion and inheritance, He shields, shelters, provides and protects you. God as our portion offers us all we need or desire depending on His will for us and those things that will benefit us even as John Wesley asserts. In his expression, he rejoices in God as his portion, and desires no better, no other felicity. This is purely a true understanding of God we serve and all He can do for us. About our protection, Jesus testified in John 10:28 and John 17:12.
The Lord’s portion as used in Psalm 16:5 according to Family Bible Notes are, “Those whom He set apart especially for Himself, treated as His peculiar treasure, and from whom He might rightfully expect special revenue of glory.” This is what God expects from us always. Are you one of His portions? Remember that He didn’t call us without endowing us.
We should understand the whole of Psalm 16:6 not literally saying of David's earthly heritage in the land of Canaan, but figuratively of God Himself, as his All-Satisfying portion. This made his lot secured. Having God as his portion, guaranteed and secured his lot. Such secured lot can become yours if you give your life to Jesus accepting Him as your Lord and Saviour. He does not abandon whatever is entrusted to Him. Entrust yourself to God and believe in Him. He will keep you safe and satisfy you with the best portion from His lot. The choice is all yours now – take it or leave it.
Food for Thought: Is God your All–satisfying portion?
Prayer: Help me, O Lord my God, to depend on you as my portion and lot now and forever in Jesus name. Amen.

BLESSEDNESS OF THE RIGHTEOUS 2: Devotion for Monday October 10, 2016

BLESSEDNESS OF THE RIGHTEOUS 2: Devotion for Monday October 10, 2016
Text: Psalm 112:6 – 10    Memory verse: Psalm 112 verse 6
A man of faith who loves God is fearless and he overcomes (1 John 5:4 & 5) just as we read yesterday. David was fearless when he confronted Goliath and he overcame a well known warrior and champion. If you are afraid, you cannot triumph. Anyone who is afraid will always fail as Saul and other Israelis soldiers failed to have their names written in gold. Anyone who is fearful will easily be shaken. Such person is never stable in his thoughts, faith and actions. Do you want to be victorious and triumph in that spiritual or physical battle you are currently going through? Then fear God and not the devil or man. Sacred Songs & Solos (Sankey) 561 is a great source of insight on how you can be courageous and fearless in your Christian race.
Another blessedness of the righteous is that the person is not shaken. Sometimes, Satan and his agents will try by all means to move the person, but because his foundation in the Lord is firm, he shall never be moved, at least not moved for ever; if he is shaken for a time, yet he settles again quickly. He regains himself like the story I told in yesterdays devotion.
Beloved, are you easily shaken by threats of the enemies, lack of basic necessities of life, fear of the unknown, etc? You should always have the words of Christ in mind. He said, “Let not your heart be troubled … (Jn. 14:1). Of a truth, many times I do shake over things that God had done for me previously. However, when I remember what God did previously for me, I will regain myself. That shows the vulnerability of man. Things can move us but when we hide the word of God in our hearts, we can dig them out and strengthen ourselves.
A righteous man will have a good reputation, and that gives him satisfaction. He strives for a good name; a name for good things, with God and man. These will make people to remember him forever (112:6b). His heart is established because he fears the Lord and he is never afraid. What can be said about you? Is your heart established in the Lord? Are you easily shaken by problems? Then trust the Lord for in Him, you will be established and not be shaken.
Food for Thought: An established heart in the Lord can never be shaken.
Prayer: God, establish my heart in you so that problems of life will not shake me.

BLESSEDNESS OF THE RIGHTEOUS: Devotion for Sunday October 9, 2016

BLESSEDNESS OF THE RIGHTEOUS: Devotion for Sunday October 9, 2016

Text: Psalm 112:1 – 5     Memory verse: Psalm 112 verse 1

Few days ago, I travelled to Abuja with my wife and baby in a public transport. On our way after Okene and before Lokoja, we had a flat tyre. The spare tyre in the vehicle was not good. We saw a cyclist and requested that he should take the driver to the nearest town to effect repairs on the tyre. As the cyclist packed near me, he asked, Baa Hausa – Do I hear Hausa and I responded negatively. He muttered English by saying, This place e no good – This place is not good Immediately he said that, I became afraid and many thoughts came into my mind about the enemies attacking us. After some few minutes, I came to my sense and started binding the devil and his evil thoughts. That was how I overcame the fear.

Someone once said that fear is devil’s strongest weapon of war. The moment he succeeds in putting fear into you, all other things like doubt, intimidation, anxiety, worries, despair, etc, will follow. Jesus warns us not to fear anyone who can’t kill the soul (Matthew 10:28). Most importantly, we should understand that we can overcome fear when we trust in God just as the Psalmist posited here in our bible reading for the day. In the opinion of Family Bible Note, “Trust in God keeps the souls of His people in peace, while others are quaking with apprehension of evils that are coming upon them.” Trust in God, grants us boldness and authority for exploits.

Who are these fearless people the Psalmist mentioned in Psalm 112:1? What are they known for as we have in Psalm 112:1b? When we fear God and obey His command, we cannot fear any man rather we can respect them if they deserve it (Luke 12:4 & 5). Sin brings fear. The heart of the righteous is established as Treasury of David asserts here, that the Psalmist's love for God is deep and true, his confidence in God is firm and unmoved; his courage has a firm foundation, and is supported by Omnipotence. He has become settled by experience, and confirmed by years. He is not a rolling stone, but a pillar in the house of the Lord. Do you love, fear and obey God?

Food for Thought: Psalm 1:1 and 2

Prayer: God, grant me the heart to fear and obey your command in Jesus name.

AWAKE FROM YOUR SLUMBER: Devotion for Saturday October 8, 2016

AWAKE FROM YOUR SLUMBER: Devotion for Saturday October 8, 2016
Text: Romans 13:11 – 14     Memory verse: Romans 13 v 11
Ability to read time and understand is very important not only in the Christian race but also in all our endeavours in this life. Romans 13:11 states, “And do this, knowing the time ...” There, Paul was speaking about love and in this verse he wants believers to realize their constant need to show love, especially considering the time that Christ’s return is near.
Most passages that teach or warn us about Christ’s return centre on our responsibility to be morally prepared, spiritually alert, and diligently serving God and humanity (1 Pet. 4:11; Jas. 5:8; 1 Jn. 2:18). The warnings found in these passages are essentially necessary for our growth and development as Christians. Believers must be vigilant, alert, and not caught unaware and unprepared when Christ returns. Jesus Christ gave us similar warning when He warned us in these passages; Matthew 24:14, 25:13; Mark 13:33 and Luke 12:40.
The reason for this moral preparation and spiritual alertness giving to us by Paul in our text is because the old sinful nature (Romans 13:13) will still cause problems from time to time, but he (Paul) requires believers to wake up from slumber. Clothing ourselves with Christ means we should put on His character; allowing Him to take control of us in all ramifications (Ephesians 4:24; Colossians 3:10), and taking over our thought from where our actions originate. Sinful actions and attitudes all start with a single thought. This is the reason behind the admonition in Proverbs 4:23.
Beloved, are you asleep in negligence, works of darkness, revelry and drunkenness, lewdness and lust, strife and envy? Many things are pointers to the fact that we are sleeping. Some of them are seen in us when we find it hard to pray; when we cant open our mouths to preach the gospel, when our love and commitments to the things of God has waxed cool, etc. Paul is warning you to wake up and put on the armour of light (Isaiah 60:1; Ephesians 5:14) and to righteousness (1 Corinthians 15:34). Remember the return of Christ is certain and inevitable. It is now closer than when we first believed. Be prepared!
Food for Thought: Are you awake or still sleeping?
Prayer: God, help me to be alert and watchful as I await the return of Jesus.

BE FERVENT IN SPIRITUAL MATTERS: Devotion for Friday October 7, 2016

BE FERVENT IN SPIRITUAL MATTERS: Devotion for Friday October 7, 2016
Text: Romans 12:9 – 13         Memory verse: Romans 12 v 11
Fervent means showing passionate enthusiasm or glowingly hot. In the context of our text, it is being passionately enthusiastic in spiritual matters. To be enthusiastic is to show excited interest. What Paul meant here is that Roman Christians should be excited about spiritual things more than any other thing else. He advised that the professed love of Christians to each other should be sincere, free from deceit, and deceitful compliments. Again, they must detest and dread all evil, and love and delight in whatever is kind and useful; being zealous, enthusiastic, and not indifferent. We should be ready to entertain travellers and strangers, especially such as are labouring or suffering for Christ as there is occasion and we must welcome strangers.
Those that rejoice in hope are likely to be patient in tribulation. This informs Paul’s advice because our hope as Christian is in heaven, where Christ is. We should not be cold or weary in the duty of prayer. These admonitions will help to improve our commitment to God and our relationship with one another. Christians, who serve the Lord enthusiastically, would never want to be lazy. Paul is not advocating activity for activity’s sake. Rather, we should consistently use our spiritual gifts to serve the body. We have been called (1:6–7), challenged (12:1–2), and equipped (12:4–6) for serving the Lord. We must fight against discouragement, depression, and being negative; we must do our best to keep our spiritual temperature high.
Food for Thought: Christians, who serve the Lord enthusiastically, would never want to be lazy.

Prayer: Lord, rekindle my enthusiasm for your service in Jesus name.

REVEALING CHRIST TO THE WORLD: Devotion for Thursday October 6, 2016

REVEALING CHRIST TO THE WORLD: Devotion for Thursday October 6, 2016
Text: John 1:29 – 34        Memory verse: John 1 verse 31
If we, Christians truly appreciate what Christ has done for us, there is no limit to the extent which we can reveal Him to the world. What Christ had done for and is still doing for us are enough for us to shout to the hearing of the world about them on daily basis. Unfortunately, we are too quiet about Christ and all He does for us daily.
When Jesus Christ was commissioning the disciples on the day of Ascension, He solemnly charged them and we the present day disciples (Christians) by extension to be His witnesses (Acts 1:8); to tell the world all we know about Him and all He has done to save humanity. That is the only thing we can do to justify our redemption from the powers of sin, the world and the devil. John saw Jesus coming to him, and pointed Him out as the Lamb of God. His preaching centred on repentance, yet he told his followers that they were to look to Jesus only for the pardon of their sins. John’s purpose for baptizing people was to reveal Jesus to Israel. In other words, the baptism he organised for people was a prelude to the manifestation of Christ to Israel.
Just as John the Baptist had the mandate to reveal Christ to Israelis, so we have been mandated to reveal Christ to our own Jerusalem and to the uttermost part of this world. We can do this through the life of Christ manifesting in us and through the word of God we preach to people. John was a great example to Israel that was the reason they kept asking if he was the Messiah. On our part we should reveal Christ to the world by living out His life in us. This is one of the best ways to reveal Him.
Action: As you go forth into the world today, let the life of Christ be seen in you.
Prayer: God, use me to reveal Jesus to the world through my words and action.

THE TRUE RELIGION: Devotion for Wednesday October 5, 2016

THE TRUE RELIGION: Devotion for Wednesday October 5, 2016
Text: James 1:26 – 27    Memory verse: James 1 v 27
In our text, James speaks of a relationship with God where He is allowed to direct the terms of our behaviour. To him, this is pure and lasting religion. James explains religion in terms of practical service and personal purity that is by its fruits. According to his explanation, true religion has two sides: first, that of love and mercy; secondly, that of purity from worldly defilement. Rituals done with reverence are not wrong; but if the person still refuses to obey God in daily life by living out his faith, his religion will not be accepted by God.
However, it is pertinent to note that pure and lasting religion is not perfect observance of rules and observances; instead, it is a spirit that pervades our hearts and lives (Leviticus 19:18 and Isaiah 1:16-17). Like Jesus, James explains religion in terms of a vital inner faith that acts itself out in daily life. Our conduct must be in keeping with our faith (1 Corinthians 5:8).
Worthy of note here is the fact that those with pure and lasting religion will refuse to let the world corrupt them. Are you one of those people who will not allow the world to corrupt you? To keep ourselves from being corrupted by the world, we need to commit ourselves to Christ’s ethical and moral standard, and system, not the world’s standard (Romans 12:2). We are not to adapt to the world’s value system like money, power, and pleasure. True faith means nothing if we are contaminated with such values. What is your position? Don’t allow your faith to be contaminated with values of money, power, pleasures, politics, etc.
Food for Thought: Have you allowed the world to corrupt you or you are still following Christ’s standard?
Prayer: Lord God, grant that my religion will not be that of confession alone but of purity, love and mercy in Jesus name.

A MENTOR INDEED: Devotion for Tuesday October 4, 2016

A MENTOR INDEED: Devotion for Tuesday October 4, 2016
Text: Text: Philippians 4:8 & 9      Memory verse:Philippians 4:9
A mentor is an experienced adviser, trainer or supporter. Here, Paul was confident, bold and unwavering as he made this statement in our text. He knew his call and the person that called him which made him to be focused, dedicated and committed to that call. He exuded such boldness and authority in asking the Philippians to imitate him because of the exemplary life he lived among the people when he ministered there (Acts 18:3; 20:34; 1 Cor. 4:1–12; & 2 Cor. 7:2–4). Can you list some of the exemplary qualities of Paul and his ministry in these verses read? Compare these qualities of Paul with that of your Pastor and see if there is any similarity or difference.
Our call as people in the ordained ministry or the laity is to be worthy shepherds because today we all are priests unto God. God called us to set example for others (1 Tim 4:12). The preacher is the interpreter of the spiritual life and should be an example of it. Can you say the words of our text to people under you as a Pastor, father, mother, teacher, etc? When going on transfer to a new station, will you be bold enough to say what is in our text today? On retirement, can you say what Paul told the church at Philippi? We should live as light of the world and salt of the earth. Beware of how you live because all you are doing is on record. Live as a worthy servant for there is a reward for faithfulness.
Food for Thought: A good mentor is always bold to say imitate me. Are you one?

Prayer: Lord, make me a worthy mentor of people under my care.

STAND IN THE GAP: Devotion for Monday October 3, 2016

STAND IN THE GAP: Devotion for Monday October 3, 2016
Text: Ezekiel 22:23 – 31      Memory verse: Ezekiel 22 verse 30
Whatever we do as leaders or priest will always have effect on the people we lead whether good of bad. If only we hope to make great impacts on the people we lead, we should be very cautious of what we do; the kind of policies we introduce and the kind of advice we receive from people. When wicked leaders collaborate with wicked and false prophets, and priests to ruin a nation and corrupt its faith and practices through false doctrines, ungodliness and iniquity, it will bring unbearable consequences because it will definitely permeate the masses.
This is the case in this our country and most other countries of the world. Unfortunately, the deceiver and the deceived cannot escape Gods anger. At the revelation of His anger, the people with their rulers and teachers will become like briers and thorns ready to be consumed by the fire of His wrath. None of them will be spared. That is the extend God can go in dealing with us in His anger.
As Christians who fear God, we should unite to promote His truth and righteousness; as wicked men of every rank and profession plot together to run them down. This is what is expected of us if only we can make our world a better place for all of us to live in. A situation where we who ought to be bearers of light turn out to become agents of darkness will at the long run receive the wrath of God.
When the society is morally bankrupt, it will be hard to see anyone who seeks the face of God in fasting and prayers. This was the reason God expressed sadness over the situation in Ezekiel 22:30. God sought for a man that would stand in the gap; that would faithfully exhort, reprove and counsel, with all long-suffering and doctrine because there was a serious breach made in the moral state and feeling of the people. But none was to be found! Today, most of us instead of standing at the gap because of the moral decadence in our society, we resort to joining them or complaining. We should stand at the gap always for that is what God expects from us.
Food for Thought: Isaiah 59:16

Prayer: Lord, grant me the grace I need to stand at the gap always for my family and my nation in Jesus name.

WHEN GOD IS ANGRY: Devotion for Sunday October 2, 2016

WHEN GOD IS ANGRY: Devotion for Sunday October 2, 2016
Text: Ezekiel 22:17 – 22       Memory verse: Ezekiel 22 verse 21
Our bible reading for the day is a continuation from where we stopped yesterday. In this our text for today, the prophet compared Israel with other nations, as the gold and silver are compared with baser metals. The prophet describes them as the refuse that is consumed in the furnace, or thrown away when the silver is refined. What a comparison and assessment! This result ought not to be associated with people who have the Almighty God as their God.
This is very unfortunate when compared with the glory they have enjoyed when they were in good terms with God. Then nations were afraid of them. What happened to Israeli nation is also same with anyone who has tasted the mercies of God and later fall out of faith. In God's assessment and account, they were seen as useless and good for nothing. In the furnace, the dross shall be fully separated, and the good metal purified. That is the essence of the furnace.
When God brings His own people into the furnace, He sits by them as the refiner by his gold, to see that they are not continued there any longer than necessary. This is how God treats us. We know the case of Job. God didnt allow him to stay longer than necessary when he had proved that his sickness and troubles of life shouldnt make him to curse God as Satan anticipated. I have personally had such experience.
Therefore, it is expedient we take to heart this warning from Matthew Henry Concise Commentary. In his opinion, those who suffer pains, or lingering sickness, and find that their hearts can scarcely bear these light and momentary afflictions, take warning to flee from the wrath to come; for if these trials are not sanctified by the power of the Holy Spirit, to the cleansing their hearts and hands from sin, far worse things will come upon them. God’s anger can consume us in a twinkle of an eye and the only way to avoid it is to amend our ways. We should escape it by repenting of our sins and turning back to Him. Are you willing to do it today?
Food for Thought: Nahum 1:6
Prayer: My God and my Father, give me a truthful heart to love and obey you because it is a fearful thing to fall into your hands in Jesus mighty name I pray. Amen.

REPROACH TO NATIONS: Devotion for Saturday October 1, 2016

REPROACH TO NATIONS: Devotion for Saturday October 1, 2016
Text: Ezekiel 22:1 – 16      Memory verse: Ezekiel 22 verse 4
Happy independent celebrations to Nigeria and Nigerians! Today is the 56th Independence Anniversary of Nigerian nation. We congratulate Nigerians as they celebrate this day.
Here in our text for the day, Jerusalem is called a bloody city because of her crimes. This chapter of Ezekiel explains why Jerusalem’s judgment would come (Ezekiel 22:2–16), how it would come (Ezekiel 22:17–22), and who would be affected by it (Ezekiel 22:23–31). The sins which Jerusalem stands charged with are exceedingly sinful – murder, idolatry, disobedience to parents, oppression and extortion, profanation of the Sabbath and holy things, seventh commandment sins, lewdness and adultery.
What would have led a nation adopted by a holy, righteous and pure God into this level of sin, crime and evil? Not being mindful of God led them into this wickedness. They took the mercies and grace of God for granted and thus due to their complacency and lukewarmness, they started compromising which took them into these evil they were charged of here.
Sinners provoke God by forgetting Him. When they do not take His ordinances to heart, they can do anything they like. When they also see the worship of God as ceremonies without spiritual attachment to it, their worship will not have any impact on them. Jerusalem has filled the measure of her sins. Family Bible Notes says about Ezekiel 22:4 that, “When we see a community giving itself up to the practice of iniquity of every kind without restraint, we may be certain, from the sure testimony of God, that its days of punishment are near. The position of Family Bible Notes here can well be said of our present generation where all manner of evil are seen on daily basis.
The sins charged against Jerusalem, are similar to what we see in Nigeria today – murder, oppression and extortion, adultery, etc. The spate of Fulani herdsmen and marauders, killings, abduction and kidnapping, Boko Haram, budget padding, corruption, etc are all pointers to the assertion that our present day Nigeria is similar to what Ezekiel saw in Jerusalem at the time he was prophesying. Just like Jerusalem became a reproach to nations around her so our country, Nigeria has become a reproach to nations around her.
As Family Bible Notes posited above, we are expecting God’s judgment upon this country for we have turned against God in so many ways. In fact we have started reaping the fruit of our evil, greed, corruption, hatred, in ability to forgive ourselves, etc with the current economic recession and poor leadership we have experienced in Nigeria since independence.
Think of the number of churches in our country. What are the effects of these churches in our nation? Are the perpetrators of these crimes not found in our churches? We should be prepared for the day of the Lord. How prepared are you for God’s judgment because it will certainly come? Don’t think you can escape it unless you repent. Nigeria needs a Solemn Assembly which should be led by our leader. Until we sincerely and truly repent, we cannot escape the wrath of God that will be revealed to avenge the blood of innocent souls spilled in this country.
Food for Thought: Righteousness exalts a nation, but sin is a reproach to any people - Proverbs 14:34.

Prayer: Lord God, heal our country and her people that we will no longer be reproach unto nations in Jesus name.
