A PROPHET IN ISRAEL: Devotion for Tuesday May 31, 2016

A PROPHET IN ISRAEL: Devotion for Tuesday May 31, 2016

Text: 2 Kings 5:7 – 8     Memory verse: v 8

When Jehoram, the king of Israel got the letter sent by the king of Syria through Naaman, he tore his cloth, a way of expressing grief and despair. The writer of the letter Naaman brought does not mean it should be taken literally. It may be that, since the letter was addressed to the king of Israel, Jehoram saw this as a potentially embarrassing situation for him politically. He well knew he could not heal Naaman and this might be seen as a political snub, leading to new hostilities. Unfortunately, it didn’t occur to Jehoram that there are still prophets of God in the land of Israel because of the level of idol worship in the days of Ahab. This made Elisha to chide him.

The language of Elisha here is not out of arrogance or pride but to chide kings of Syria and Israel. Most times we undermine what we have. Some people are running from church to church, fellowship to fellowship in search of miracles undermining what they have in their church. They go about to wrong places like the king of Syria and Naaman who went to the wrong place for miracle. If God could touch my life and I repented in the church where I am now, what else can’t that God give to me if I ask Him? Jehoram didn’t know that there was a prophet in Israel. Do you know that there is a prophet in your church? God can use him to meet your need.

Food for Thought: Most people don’t know the value of what God has blessed them with until others start requesting for and making use of it.

Prayer: Help me to value what I have, O Lord, before it eludes me.

A MISTAKE: Devotion for Monday May 30, 2016

A MISTAKE: Devotion for Monday May 30, 2016

Text: 2 Kings 5:4 – 6 Memory verse: v 6

Naaman set out for Samaria, carrying with him some luxurious gifts; ten changes of raiment, splendid robes and outer garments for special days and occasions, “festal” gowns (RSV, JB). To this day Damascus is known for its beautiful brocade cloth. To own a garment made of such material would indeed have been a status symbol, and highly valued. A talent of silver contained three thousand shekels. According to Living bible translation, “Naaman started our taking gifts of US$20,000 worth of silver and US$60,000 worth of gold,” (5:5). This calculation gives us a clear view of the kind of luxury gifts Naaman took to Israel. Unfortunately, all those gifts and the letter to King of Israel were mistakes on the part of Naaman because he can’t buy the blessings of God with money.

This is how some of us make grievous mistakes in worshipping God with our wealth and talent. Our gifts are not bribe to God. Salvation and blessings of God are gifts. Some sow seed with the mind of reaping more. It doesn’t work like that because you can’t bribe God with your money, your tithe or your talent. You should give, out of love for God. Naaman and his master wrote to the King of Israel as if the girl told them of a king who heals. Their action and letter show their arrogance. Instead of appealing to the king to urge the prophet in his domain to help, they were compelling the king.

Food for Thought: Our gifts and sacrifices are not bribe to win God’s favour and blessings.

Prayer: Lord God, help me to understand the best way to approach you and to use my gifts in worshipping you.

USE EVERY OPPORTUNITY FOR GOD: Devotion for Sunday May 29 , 2015

USE EVERY OPPORTUNITY FOR GOD: Devotion for Sunday May 29, 2016

Text: 2 Kings 5:2 – 3        Memory verse: v 3

When Paul and Silas were jailed for preaching the gospel, they were not deterred. Right there inside the prison cell, they were singing to God, using the very opportunity they had to glorify God. The result was unprecedented as souls were won for Christ. In our text for today, we saw how this young girl, a captive from Israel, used the opportunity to tell her captors that there is a God in Israel who is Almighty, who can heal her master. She didn’t nurse grudges that she has been deprived of parental love and care by her captors. She was in a foreign land proclaiming God. This little maid, though only a girl, could give an account of the famous prophet the Israelites had among them. Children should be told early enough of the wondrous works of God, that, wherever they go, they may talk of them. How much do you tell your children about God?

Every day, we have opportunities to serve God and humanity, and to preach the gospel of repentance, peace and love to people. There are pulpits everywhere which we can use to teach the word of God. Daily we have opportunity to show kindness to people. How much do we utilise these opportunities in our schools, offices, business premises, as we commute, etc? God has sent you to that school, that office, that neighbourhood at a time like this for a purpose. God can use you to spread His word. Look for opportunities to tell others what God can do. There’s no telling who will hear your message and benefit! Do so because you will account for it someday.

Action: As you go out today, ensure you use the opportunity you have to show kindness, preach the word of God and encourage someone.

Prayer: Lord, may I use every opportunity I have to do good unto people and preach your gospel in Jesus name.

A BAD TESTIMONY: Devotion for Saturday May 28, 2016

A BAD TESTIMONY: Devotion for Saturday May 28, 2016

Text: 2 Kings 5:1         Memory verse: v 1b

Here is a great testimony of Naaman, the commander of the army of Syria. He was described as a mighty man of valour, a great man in battle, used by God to wrought victories for Syria but he was a leper. What a testimony of a great man! However, the ‘but’ has a great question mark on his life. This shows that despite all his exploits in life, the leprosy has restricted him in so many ways because no honour or success can secure men from trouble. Matthew Henry puts it this way, “No man's greatness, or honour, can place him out of the reach of the sorest calamities of human life: there is many a sickly, crazy body under rich and gay clothing.” This shows that any man living has some troubles of life to contend with. Naaman took the advice of the young captive girl from Israel and he was healed.

In life, we all have one ‘but’ or another tormenting us which invariably has dented our testimonies. It may be pride, unfaithfulness, lies, anger, malice, little sins, gossip, immorality, stealing, etc. Whatever may be your own ‘but’, it is important you realise that it has dented your testimony and do something about it now. You can say that you are a Christian but you are still living a life of lies, deceit, anger, etc. That is not a good testimony. It is better to do something now or it will deny you a place in the kingdom of heaven.

Food for Thought: Every man has one negative ‘but’ or another which blemishes and diminishes him.

Prayer: My God and my Father, remove every negative ‘but’ in my life the way you healed Naaman of his leprosy in Jesus name.

GREAT QUALITIES IN CHILDREN: Devotion for Friday May 27, 2016 (CHILDREN’S DAY)

GREAT QUALITIES IN CHILDREN: DEVOTION FOR FRIDAY MAY 27, 2016  (CHILDREN’S DAY)

TEXT: MATTHEW 18:1 – 6     MEMORY VERSE: v 3

We rejoice with our children on this their day. We thank God for their lives and pray that they will grow in the fear and knowledge of God. They will not become thorns on our fleshes in Jesus name. Greatness in the view of men differs much from greatness in the sight of God. Jesus set a little child before His disciples, solemnly assuring them, that unless they were converted and made like little children, they could not enter His kingdom.

Children don’t desire authority; they don’t regard outward distinctions, are free from malice, are teachable, and willingly dependent on their parents. These are some great qualities in children that are suitable for God’s Kingdom. “It is true that they soon begin to show other dispositions, and other ideas are taught them at an early age; but these are marks of childhood, and render them proper emblems of the lowly minds of true Christians” according to Matthew Henry Concise Commentary.

Surely we need to be daily renewed in our minds that we may become simple and humble, as little children, and willing to be the least of all. How humble and teachable are you? Do you desire to be in authority and for what purpose – the glory of it or for service of humanity? Let us learn from children’s character; humble, docile, submissive and obedient. We should daily study this subject of humility, and examine our own spirits.

Food for Thought: Many characteristics of little children are sources of instruction to mankind.

Prayer: Grant unto me a humble, submissive and obedient spirit worthy of your Kingdom, O Lord my God, in Jesus name.

CAUSE BLESSINGS TO REST UPON YOU: Devotion for Thursday May 26, 2016

CAUSE BLESSINGS TO REST UPON YOU: Devotion for Thursday May 26, 2016

Text: Ezekiel 44:28 – 31         Memory verse: v 30

Our bible passage for today makes reference to priests. They are God’s inheritance and possession (44:28). What God meant here is that they shall have their maintenance from Him, that is, from the offerings and first-fruits which He assigned to them. This instruction here is from Num. 18:20–24. Thus God gave the instruction that other Israelites should take care of them and He also gave them instruction on the kind of offering they are to eat from. The essence of these instructions is to make the priest concentrate on the work assigned to them. Again it was to help the priest live above reproach that God required the people to give the very best of their offerings to the priest. The effect of giving the best is to cause a blessing to rest on their houses.

From 44:30, we should understand what God wants us to do. When these instructions were issued, the first recipients were farmers who harvest seasonally. But most of the present day Christians are civil/public servants, business men and women. On our path, God requires us to set aside our tithes to support His work and priests. We should also make provision for their comfort. Unfortunately, most priests have abused this honour but that doesn’t mean we should neglect our duties toward the genuine ones. They need your support. Supporting them will bring more blessings upon you. A friend once told me that some pastors have abused his goodwill so he has channeled his support to other less privileged people. This is also another way to cause blessings upon your family.

Action: If you don’t have any plan for helping priests, draw a plan today and start up something. Ask God to direct you on the best way to do it.

Prayer: God, as I help your priests, may I never lose my reward. Cause more blessings upon me in Jesus name.

FOOLS REJECT WISDOM: Devotion for Wednesday May 24, 2016

FOOLS REJECT WISDOM: Devotion for Wednesday May 25, 2016

Text: Proverbs 1:7 – 9       Memory verse: v 7

It is a fool that says there is no God and rejects wisdom. The best thing we can do for ourselves is to acquire wisdom. In this age of information technology, knowledge is plentiful, but wisdom is scarce. Wisdom means far more than simply knowing a lot. It is a basic attitude that affects every aspect of life. The foundation of knowledge is to fear the Lord; to honour and respect God, to live in awe of His power, and to obey His Word. Fools are persons who have no true wisdom, who follow their own devices, without regard to reason, or reverence for God. Anyone who truly wants to be wise must begin by devoting his or her life to God's service and making His word the rule of life.

Many reject wisdom directly and indirectly today. Some reject wisdom by their refusal to believe in God, study His word and refusal to heed to the teachings from the bible. We should remember the essence of the scriptures and benefits derivable from them (2 Tim 3:15, 16). As true Christians we should have implicit faith in God, which should be the controlling principle for our understanding of the world, our attitudes, and our actions. Trust in God and He will make you truly wise.

Food for Thought: Psalm 53:1

Prayer: God, help me not to reject wisdom by refusing to accept the truth in your word.

BE TRAINED IN THE WAYS OF WISDOM: Devotion for Tuesday May 24, 2016

BE TRAINED IN THE WAYS OF WISDOM: Devotion for Tuesday May 24, 2016

Text: Proverbs 1:1 – 6    Memory verse: v 3

This book of Proverbs according to Max Lucado is a book for weekdays (Monday – Saturday). It treats the importance of wisdom, piety towards God, instructions and moral discipline; understanding wise and prudent counsels. It states too that wisdom is to be shown in the conduct of our lives, which consist in righteousness with regard to other creatures. What we have in our text, is the essence of this book, Proverbs. Living Bible stated in verses 2 and 3 that Solomon wrote Proverbs “To teach his people how to live, how to act in every circumstance, for he wanted them to be understanding, just and fair in everything they did.” If people take heed to wisdom, according to Solomon's Proverbs, they will gain knowledge and discretion which are indispensable in our present age.

How can someone be trained in the ways of wisdom? This training comes from the fear of the Lord (1:7), sticking to moral instructions from parents and elderly ones in our neighbourhood. We can only fear the Lord when we know Him and His expectations from us. It takes a heart that has the fear of God to abstain from evil. This fear comes when we hide God’s words and commandments in our hearts (Ps 119:11). How much do you train yourself in the ways of wisdom by meditating on God’s word (Prov. 2:6)? This will grant us the needed wisdom to live righteously in our present age.

Food for Thought: Proverbs 2:6 – 9

Prayer: Lord, train me in the ways of wisdom as I meditate daily on your word.

THE LORD REMEMBERS US: Devotion for Monday May 23, 2016

THE LORD REMEMBERS US: Devotion for Monday May 23, 2016

Text: 1 Samuel 1: 19 – 27    Memory verse: v19

There is no condition we pass through in life that God is not aware of and He always plans ways of escape for us. Most times because of our impatience, we miss out in His plans thinking He is inconsiderate to our needs. It is not always true. When our blessings are delayed or devil stands against them and God finally releases them, they will become great blessings for us and our generation. God remembered Hannah (1:19). The remembrance led to one of the greatest prophets of Israel. Though God seem to forget our burdens, troubles, cares, and prayers, yet He will at length ensure that He meets our need so that we will be sure we are not out of His mind. As God remembered Hannah, so He will remember you and solve that lingering problem in Jesus name.

Blessings obtained of God in answer to prayer should be promptly and gratefully acknowledged, and measures be taken to keep His goodness in perpetual remembrance. Hannah acknowledged God’s manifold blessings (1:24–27). She did not even withhold the child as she promised. For this singular act, God blessed her with more children (1 Samuel 2:21). This shows that when we give God what is due to Him or what we have vowed, He will bless us the more. Have you made any vow to God? Endeavour to fulfill them because it is a way of attracting more blessing upon your life.

Food for Thought: When God remembers us, it makes the difference in what we finally become in life

Prayer: Lord God, remember me as you remembered Hannah and bless me with the desires of my heart. 2. Today pray for all the women having delay in conception that God will remember them as He remembered Hannah.

LIVE ABOVE TAUNTING: Devotion for Sunday May 22, 2016

LIVE ABOVE TAUNTING: Devotion for Sunday May 22, 2016

Text: 1 Samuel 1:9 – 18      Memory verse: v 10

Taunting can demoralize us but it should not deter us in living our lives and becoming what we dream of in life. The taunting from Peninnah made Hannah sad that she lost appetite but her husband consoled her and encouraged her to eat (1:8). Thereafter, the taunting led her into prayer. She would have considered the taunting by asking, why should I be angry? Why will I fret over what Peninnah said? Does being angry bring any good to me? Instead of binding the burden upon myself, I had better easy off and cast it upon the Lord in prayer. These motivated her into praying and thus she overcame the taunting from Peninnah (1:10). In the bitterness of her soul Hannah prayed and went ahead to back her request with a vow (1:11). This may have challenged God to answer her speedily.

From the way Hannah treated the challenge and taunting from her mate there are lessons for us. (1) We shouldn’t waste all our time in replying our critics and accusers. Rather we should use it meaningfully to improve ourselves and thus put them to shame. (2) The taunting and critics from our enemies should inspire us to draw closer to God the more. What Peninnah did made Hannah a prayer warrior. She had no time to reply her but she casted the problem to God because He is the one that solves all problem. (3) We should occasionally make vows to back up our request as Hannah did. (4) We should believe God for an answer after praying.

Food for Thought: We are the ones that can make taunting relevant when we let it deny us living our lives as we ought to.

Prayer: Lord, let not the taunting against my life deny me from becoming what you want me to be in Jesus name.

DON’T TAUNT PEOPLE: Devotion for Saturday May 21, 2016

DON’T TAUNT PEOPLE: Devotion for Saturday May 21, 2016

Text: 1 Samuel 1:1 – 8    Memory verse: v 6

“If the devotions of a family prevail not to put an end to its divisions, yet let not the divisions put a stop to the devotions” so says Matthew Henry. Despite the problems in the family of Elkanah, it didn’t deter him from bringing them to the presence of God in Shiloh every year (1:3). Peninnah had children but Hannah had none yet and this gave Peninnah the edge over her which she used in taunting her (1:6). Though Hannah had no child then, Elkanah still loved her dearly and demonstrated this openly (1:4, 5). Maybe the love Elkanah had for Hannah made Peninnah to despise and taunt Hannah because of her problem. This is always a problem in polygamy.

Deut 7:13, 14 teach us that obedience to the terms of the covenant will be rewarded by fertility (in children, flocks, and agricultural produce). Conversely, barrenness to the Israelites was seen as an indication of God’s displeasure against them. Under such a system of belief, barren women easily become the object of heart-rending taunts by child-producing second wives, or even neighbours (Gen. 30:1-5; Lk. 1:25, 57, 58). Such domestic broils are a natural result of polygamy or bigamy. Do you taunt people because of their problems; no child, no spouse, no job, physical stature, etc? Remember you are not their God. God rose for Hannah at the end and her name is now a household name. Who hears of Peninnah today? Beware!

Food for Thought: Taunting someone is a mockery against his/her Maker.

Prayer: Our God in heaven, help me never to taunt someone because of the person’s predicament, trouble or sickness in Jesus name.

YOUR DILIGENCE SORTS YOU OUT 2: Devotion for Friday May 20, 2016

YOUR DILIGENCE SORTS YOU OUT 2: Devotion for Friday May 20, 2016

Text: Genesis 39:20- – 23       Memory verse: v 22

Two days ago, we read how Joseph’s diligence sought him out in Potiphar’s house. Going to prison did not lessen that virtue in him. Some will easily conclude that there is no need being good and diligent if they were in Joseph’s shoes having passed through all the trouble from his brothers down to Egypt. But it wasn’t so with Joseph. Rather he chose to fear God and live a Godly life. He brought his diligence and Godly life to bear in his activities in the prison. He didn’t pretend or hide his true identity. He demonstrated his religion which affected all. The Prison Guard noticed him and sorts him out (39:21). All these were possible because God’s favour was upon him even in the prison.

Family Bible Notes stated that “No evils which men can inflict can shut out the presence and favour of God from those who trust in Him; and a servant in a dungeon may be happier than a king on his throne. Though he may suffer for righteousness' sake, in due time he will be delivered, and his sorrow turned into joy.” Don’t let people’s judgment about you dampen your enthusiasm for righteousness and holiness. Do not betray your faith in Christ because you feel you are being punished wrongly. It may be a stepping stone into greatness. As you maintain your diligence in your marriage, office, prison, market, business, etc, as a Christian, God will certainly sort you out for greatness among your fellows.

Food for Thought: Diligence in our service and endeavour is for our good than the people we serve.

Prayer: Make me more diligent, O Lord, because it is for my own good.

PRICE OF GOD’S GIFTS AND INTEGRITY: Devotion for Thursday May 19, 2016

PRICE FOR GOD’S GIFTS AND INTEGRITY: Devotion for Thursday May 19, 2016

Text: Genesis 39:7 – 19    Memory verse: v 19

God has never made mistake in blessing us. The way some people abuse these blessings and gifts, gives me cause for concern. If we abuse our gifts, we will pay dearly for it. Our beauty, blessings and gifts are snare to us because they will either make us or mar us. It forbids pride in it, and requires constant watchfulness against the temptation that attends it. On the other hand, we should have full control over our eyes, lest they infect our hearts. Potiphar’s wife couldn’t set off her eyes from Joseph in her husband’s house, lusting after Joseph (39:7). Because Joseph a handsome young man of honesty and integrity, he became a snare to Potiphar’s wife but he refused to consent to her request, frame up against him. He was subsequently imprisoned.

The frame up and imprisonment was the price Joseph paid for the gift of God in him. Many people have paid similar prices. Some fell into the hands of the devil and his agents. Some after the fall could not even summon courage to rise again. There is nobody gifted by God in terms of beauty, being handsome, intelligent, talented, etc, that hasn’t been tempted or will not be tempted. What matters is what should be your stand when tempted. Will you yield to their temptation because you want to avoid going to prison, being punished, etc? There is somebody using this devotion, who out of fear of being punished, refused to speak the truth as Potiphar’s wife did and somebody is suffering today. God requires you to go and make necessary restitutions. Despite the price Joseph paid, God was with him and he was loved and privileged above all other prisoners.

Food for Thought: Every gift and blessings from God has a price tag.

Prayer: Grant me the grace I need, O God, never to abuse your gift upon my life or become a stumbling block to other people because of their gifts.

YOUR DILIGENCE SORTS YOU OUT 1: Devotion for Wednesday May 18, 2016

YOUR DILIGENCE SORTS YOU OUT 1: Devotion for Wednesday May 18, 2016

Text: Genesis 39:1 – 6     Memory verse: v 3

Beloved, our enemies may strip us of outward distinctions and ornaments; but wisdom and grace cannot be taken from us. They may separate us from friends, relatives, and country; but they cannot take from us the presence of the Lord. They may shut us from outward blessings, rob us of liberty, and confine us in prisons; but they cannot shut us out from communion with God, from the throne of grace, or take from us the blessings of salvation (Gen. 37:31–36). Have your enemies robbed you of your distinction? Never mind, God’s presence and favour are still with you and that will make the difference in your life. Just be diligent. Joseph was blessed and God’s presence was with him even in the house of slavery. He was diligent not minding what he had passed through. This singled him out in the house of Potiphar.

It was Joseph diligence that made him a sort out in another country where he was a mere slave. Many of us usually complain about our environment not being conducive enough to practice our Christian faith. We complain about the people we work with; our bosses, our neighbourhood, our pastors, our Bible study leaders, etc, thus using such as excuse to fail in our duties. Thus many have left their God-given talent because they see all around them as not conducive. Joseph proved to us that we can thrive more in an environment that may not be conducive. Arise and shine, O Child of God! God is with you in that environment.

Food for Thought: Our diligence is noticed and appreciated the more when we practice it in environment that is not conducive.

Prayer: Lord God, help me to be diligent no matter where I may be because that is the only way I will be a sort out by you and men in Jesus name.

BE GENEROUS: Devotion for Tuesday May 17, 2016

BE GENEROUS: Devotion for Tuesday May 17, 2016

Text: 1 Samuel 30:21 – 26        Memory verse: v 23

David used his authority to over-rule the submission of some of “the wicked and worthless men” who went with him as they pursued the Amalekites (30:22, 23). He managed the situation with all sweetness, though they were such wicked and unreasonable men, he called them brethren; not only as of the same nation and religion with him, but as his fellow-soldiers. He admonished them to be magnanimous with what God has provided because it didn’t come out of sheer hard work but the mercies of God.

There are two major lessons we should learn in this our text.

1. We shouldn’t unkindly and injuriously withhold from our brethren whatever God has freely given or imparted to us. What are the things God has freely given to you? It may be your time; your wealth, your strength, your talents, etc. They are gifts that should be used for the good of others. You shouldn’t brag with them or hoard them for selfish use in your neighbourhood, office, church and the society at large.

2. Secondly, as leaders in whatever capacity we find ourselves, we should manage the behaviours of all under us in such a way that there will be peace always. David managed the anger of some of these “wicked and worthless men.” This should be a challenge to us in leadership positions.

Food for Thought: Being magnanimous with what God has given freely to us is a sign that we are grateful to Him.

Prayer: Our father in heaven, help me to be magnanimous with what you have given freely to me.

DIVINE CONSULTATION: Devotion for Monday May 16, 2016

DIVINE CONSULTATION: Devotion for Monday May 16, 2016

Text: 1 Samuel 30:7 – 10       Memory verse: v 8

David couldn’t go to the Tabernacle to ask the Lord for guidance because it was in Saul’s territory. Therefore, he called for the ephod, the only Tabernacle-related object Abiathar had with him. In the presence of the priest and this priestly garment, he asked God for direction. When David called for the ephod, he was really asking the priest to bring him the Urim and Thummim, which were kept in a pouch attached to the ephod. Only the high priest could carry and use the Urim and Thummim (Ex 39:1-21.). God usually answers us slowly and gradually but here He answered David speedily because any delay would amount to evil on the captives. Our God is so gracious that He considers even the degree of our necessities, and associates Himself with them.

God urged us in Ps 50:15 saying, “Call upon me in the day of trouble; I will deliver you, and you shall glorify me." David called upon God and He answered him immediately. This shows that God is aware of all we pass through, the necessity of our needs and ever willing to help us if only we can call upon Him. Are you in need today and have become so anxious about it? The bible enjoins us in 1 Pet 5:7 to cast all our cares and anxiety upon Him for He cares for us. Will you do that today? If you do, you will certainly have peace.

Food for Thought: Philippians 4:6

Prayer: Help my weakness, O Lord, that in time of trouble, I will confide in you and not be in despair in Jesus name.

STRENGTH COMES FROM GOD: Devotion for Sunday May 15, 2016

STRENGTH COMES FROM GOD: Devotion for Sunday May 15, 2016

Text: 1 Samuel 30:1 – 6     Memory verse: v 6

It is not wise when we are under troubles to vent reproaches on others, or to give up in despair; we should rather confess and forsake our sins, seek help from God, and endeavor to learn and do His will. This is the best thing to do when we are in trouble or despair. In Isa 40:31, the Bible gave us a clear example of what to do when we are in despair or trouble. It says “But those who wait on the Lord shall renew their strength; they shall mount up with wings like eagles, they shall run and not be weary, they shall walk and not faint.” This was exactly what David did according to our text. When he was renewed, he and his men mounted wings ran and recovered all that were taken by the Amalekites.

Our strength comes from God. For this reason Jesus warned that without Him, we cannot do anything meaningful (Jn. 15:5). Are you depending on your strength, it will fail. Are you depending on charms, they will fail. It is only when we depend on God that we are sure of succeeding in our endeavours. David’s men instead of planning a rescue, they looked for someone to blame. But David found his strength in God and began looking for a solution instead of a scapegoat. When facing problems, remember that it is useless to look for someone to blame or criticize. Instead, consider how you can help find a solution.

Food for Thought: Strengthening oneself in the Lord is a mark of dependence and confidence in God with whom all things are possible.

Prayer: Lord God, help me to always depend on you when I am in despair.

FIRST POINT OF CALL DURING CRISES: Devotion for Saturday May 14, 2016

FIRST POINT OF CALL DURING CRISES: Devotion for Saturday May 14, 2016

Text: 1 Samuel 19:18 – 24       Memory verse: v 18

An aphorism of Aniocha people says that “It is only a tree that hears they are coming to fall it and it will stay.” This is not so with animal especially with human being. Such person will certainly flee. Saul was consumed with jealousy over David’s growing popularity, but the Spirit of God immobilized him so he was unable to harm David. We saw one attempt yesterday. This shows that no matter what people plan against us, it will not harm us except God approves it. When David left his home, he ran to the house of God and to the priest. In flying to Samuel, David made God his refuge. Samuel, as a prophet, was best able to advise him what to do in this day of distress. More so, it was Samuel who anointed him as king to take over from Saul.

Beloved in Christ, when you are faced with challenges of life or the threat of the enemies, where would be your first point of call? Do you run to a native doctor first or you go to God’s house where the pastor will counsel and pray for you? This is one serious mistake we make always. When we place God as our first priority in times of need and trouble, He will rise on our behalf. David went to the house of God because He was the one that made him. David knows that without God, Saul will easily eliminate him. We should have this kind of understanding. God gave you that position, land, husband, etc, people are struggling with you. Go to Him and He will certainly tell you what to do.

Food for Thought: When problem confronts you, what readily comes to your mind?

Prayer: Almighty God, grant me the grace to always seek you first in time of need before any other thing.

GOD USES HUMANS AS AGENTS: Devotion for Friday May 13, 2016

GOD USES HUMANS AS AGENTS: Devotion for Friday May 13, 2016

Text: 1 Samuel 19:11 – 17     Memory verse: v 13

There is no limit to what our God can do and who or what He can use to fulfill His will and purposes. When Balaam didn’t hear His word, He used his donkey to speak to him (Num. 22:27–34). The story of David and Goliath is well known to us. God used a small stone to humiliate him for blasphemy and reproach on Him. After David had killed Goliath, the Philistine giant and champion, Saul became his avowed enemy. He tried every opportunity that comes his way to kill David. Here is another design of mischief by Saul to kill David. When David had escaped the javelin (19:10), Saul sent some of his guards after him to lay wait at the door of his house, and to assassinate him in the morning as soon as he stirred out (19:11). What was his wrong? He did not ask God to make him king. It was God’s decision which no man can overturn.

“God moves in a mysterious ways, His wonders to perform” so says a song writer, William Cowper. Instead of Jonathan and Michal taking side with their father Saul to attack David who was a clear favourite to succeed their father, they pitched their tent with David. This was an act of God. Because David’s way pleased God, He turned the heart of Saul’s children to love him. It is my desire and prayer that God will use those who speak evil about you and those who hate you to save, help, deliver, promote and bless you in Jesus name. As God used Michal to save David, so He will use someone to help and save you today.

Food for Thought: “God moves in a mysterious in His ways, His wonders to perform” – William Cowper. Sing that hymn from Ancient and Modern 181.

Prayer: Lord, as you used Michal to save David, so I pray that you will send someone to help me in my present need in Jesus name.

BE THE JUDGE: Devotion for Thursday May 12, 2016

BE THE JUDGE: Devotion for Thursday May 12, 2016

Text: Isaiah 5: 1 – 7      Memory verse: v 3

Our bible passage for today is an imagery used by God to teach the nation of Israel and by extension we the present readers about our unfaithfulness despite the enormous grace and mercies we have received from Him. God used the imagery of a vineyard at a very good place, fertile enough to produce good fruits (5:1, 2). All that was needed to make the vineyard productive were provided (5:2). Unfortunately and regrettably too, the vineyard produce the opposite of what God expected. Instead of good grapes, it produced wild grapes that are not useful.

The lesson of the song of the vineyard shows that God’s chosen nation was to bear fruit—to carry out His work, to uphold justice. It did bear fruit, but the fruit was bad. This passage uses plays on words: the Hebrew words for justice and bloodshed sound very much alike, as do those for righteousness and oppression. The hurt friend (God) now directs rhetorical questions to the people of Judah, asking them to judge whether He is guilty of neglecting them. God often condemns sinners “out of their own mouth” (Deut 32:6; 2 Sam. 12:1-6; Job 15:6; Lk. 19:22; Rom. 3:4). Jesus gave us insight on how to identify someone by his or her fruit in Matt 7:20. Have you examined your own ‘fruit’ lately? Is it good or bad, useful or wild?

Food for Thought: Are the fruits mentioned in Galatians 5:22 and 23 the kind you bear as a Christian?

Prayer: Almighty God, as you have invested so much on me, help me to make returns equal to what you have invested in me in Jesus name.

THE WORD GIVES LIFE: Devotion for Wednesday May 11, 2016

THE WORD GIVES LIFE: Devotion for  Wednesday May 11, 2016

Text: Ezekiel 37:1 – 14     Memory verse: v 7

Many lessons are in this biblical passage especially when we feel discouraged in life. It shows us the power of God over hopeless situations. It also reveals the power in God’s word and inabilities in man. God alone is the one whose word stands. The bible says in Lam 3:37, “Who is he who speaks and it comes to pass, when the Lord has not commanded it?” God used this revelation to illustrate how He will restore Israel from their hopeless situation in captivity to glory in their land (37:12–14). God likened the spiritual dead situation of Israel at that time to dry bones.

Your church may seem like a heap of dry bones to you, spiritually dead with no hope of vitality. But just as God promised to restore His nation, He can restore any church, no matter how dry or dead it may be. Rather than give up, pray for renewal, for God can restore it to life. The hope and prayer of every church should be that God will put His Spirit into it (37:14). In fact, God is at work calling His people back to Himself, bringing new life into dead churches. On the other hand, your spiritual life, your business, your marriage, etc, may be as dry as bones and there seem to be no more lives in them. Never mind, God is able to turn it around. Go to Him in prayer today.

Food for Thought: God has answers to dryness in our physical and spiritual lives.

Prayer: Lord God, cause life into any dryness in my physical and spiritual life.

2. God revive everything in your church especially where I worship.

JUST FOR SPOTLIGHT: Devotion for Tuesday May 10, 2016

JUST FOR SPOTLIGHT: Devotion for Tuesday May 10, 2016

Text: Genesis 11:1 – 9       Memory verse: v 4

We build monuments to great moments and people but monuments are more than just memory aids; in building them we want, above all, to glorify something. We want to honour a person or idealize an event. After the Flood, God made a covenant with Noah and his descendants. But the people forgot God; His goodness, His deliverance, His judgment, and His promise soon after that. They became impressed with themselves, so much so that they decided to erect a monument for themselves. They built their tower to glorify their greatness; it became, instead, a memorial to their greatest foolishness; human arrogance. We can learn from this passage: (1) God is good and merciful to us. (2) God is greater than we are. (3) All humans are connected by sin.

The people in this story built the Tower of Babel for the whole world to see (Gen. 11:3-4). Today, people may not build statues, temples, or pyramids, but they still erect monuments in achievements, expensive clothes, big houses, fancy cars, important jobs to call attention to them. When these are used as means to give us personal identity and self-worth, these otherwise worthy pursuits take God’s place. God gives us freedom to develop in many areas, but not the freedom to replace Him. What monument have you built for yourself?

Food for Thought: What monuments are you erecting to give yourself personal identity instead of glorifying God?

Prayer: Help me Lord not to attach self worth to the blessings you have given to me. Rather, grant that I will use them to your praise and glory.

RELIGIOUS DEVIANTS: Devotion for Monday May 9, 2016

RELIGIOUS DEVIANTS: Devotion for Monday May 9, 2016

Text: Romans 1: 19 – 32     Memory verse: v 25

In this context, deviants are people who deviate from the truth. Yesterday, we read the warning of Jesus Christ concerning false prophets. Before writing this devotion, I read an article by an Egyptian Professor that Jews lied about their history. That there was never a time they lived in Egypt. This is an attempt by people to change the truth. Does anyone have excuse for not believing God? This is the argument of Paul here because God has revealed what He is like, in and through His creation (1:19ff). Unfortunately, many have deviated from the truth about God and creation while some others have refused to accept Him, choosing to worship the creature instead of the Creator (1:22 – 25). For this reason God has given up on them (1:26) and will not spare them at judgment.

Religious deviants are rampant in our days. They have giving up the worship of God to worship of Pastors, General Overseers, Bishops, Archbishops, Priests, etc. They do this by accepting what these people say as standard instead of what the Bible say. Recently, I read how a pastor in the name of deliverance asked women to pull off their clothes in the church. Another pastor asked the female members not to put on underwear as they come to church so that it will be easier for the Holy Spirit to enter into them. Abomination, you will say! I don’t blame them as much as those who give ear to them. Can you mention some other acts of religious deviants? Do you belong to religious deviants – the gay people, modern idol worshippers in the church, etc or are you one of their supporters (1:32)? Repent now before it will be too late.

Food for Thought: God cannot trade His glory with any creature

Prayer: God, help me not to deviate from the faith I received from you.

BE KNOWN FOR INTEGRITY: Devotion for Sunday May 8, 2016

BE KNOWN FOR INTEGRITY: Devotion for Sunday May 8, 2016

Text: Matthew 7: 15 – 20     Memory verse: v 20

One thing that prevents men from choosing the strait and narrow way that leads to heaven is false doctrine that guarantees them freedom and living carnal lives. We have so many of them today who believe that the teachings of Paul, Peter, John, etc, against homosexuals were wrong. Some of these false prophets brought the gay movement into the Church of God. This is the reason behind the warning Jesus gave in 7:15. You will know these false teachers by the way they drift from one position to another on doctrinal issues and the effects of their doctrines on growth in morality. We cannot know the nature of a man, but his fruits (his deeds) will express and expose that nature. Therefore, the way to detect false prophets is by their deeds. A person’s speech will not always correspond to his true nature, as it is implied in 7:21.

Good teachers consistently exhibit good behaviour, integrity and high moral character as they attempt to live out the truths of Scripture. Every one of us is subject to sin, and we must show the same mercy to others that we need for ourselves. When Jesus spoke about bad trees, he meant teachers who deliberately teach false doctrine. We must examine the teachers’ motives, the direction they are taking, and the results they are seeking. As Christians, we are teachers of the Bible by our words and action. Do we show integrity in all we do? That will give credence to our confession of faith. Let us be known for integrity and not falsehood and deceits.

Food for Thought: Matthew 3:10

Prayer: My God and my Father, help me to develop virtue of integrity in my words and action before you and men in Jesus name.

Pray and celebrate with Prisca Chimdifu Uzoma today as she marks her birthday.

LET YOUR LIGHT SHINE: Devotion for Friday May 6, 2016

LET YOUR LIGHT SHINE: Devotion for Friday May 6, 2016

Text: Isaiah 60:1 – 8        Memory verse: v 1

A true Christian is a light to the world. In Book of Common Prayer (2007:167), we have in the liturgy for baptism, where the person being baptised will be given a candle light with the following admonition. (One of the sponsors says): Receive the light of Christ to show that you have passed from darkness to light. (The congregation will respond): Shine as light in the world to the glory of God the Father, Amen. This clearly shows what the life of a Christian should be. In Matt. 5:14 – 16, Jesus made it clear that we are the light of the world. What does it imply? It means that we are to show the world things as they are, and give to men right views of them. We are to enlighten, direct, and quicken others. How much are you doing this?

In our text, Isaiah calls on the nation of Israel to arise and shine because their light has come. God's covenant with Israel is that His word and Spirit shall dwell with her forever. These are mightier than the powers of darkness (60:2a); so that in all her conflicts with them it is certain that she will, in the end, prevail (60:2b). As the light (Christ – Jn. 8:12; 9:5) is revealed, it will draw Gentiles to it (Epiphany – Matt 2:2). For us Christians of today, as far as we have the knowledge of God in us, and the favour of God towards us, our light has come. It behooves on us to shine the light for others who are still in darkness to see our light and come to it.

Food for Thought: How can you shine your light for others to see?

Prayer: Father in heaven, let my light so shine before men, that they may see my good works and glorify you in Jesus name.

FOR THE BENEFIT OF OTHERS: Devotion for Thursday May 5, 2016

FOR THE BENEFIT OF OTHERS: Devotion for Thursday May 5, 2016

Text: 1 Corinthians 12:1 – 11     Memory verse: v 7

On Monday, we learnt that all we have are gifts from God and should be used for the benefit of others and to the glory of God. We shouldn’t pride ourselves on what was given to us. Among those gifts are spiritual talents (12:1) as Paul mentioned here. Paul states that the Spirit manifesting in us diverse gifts is meant to benefit all (12:7). All Christian gifts and graces come from the Holy Spirit. He bestows different measures of grace and means of influence upon different individuals, but always for the wisest reasons: for God to be glorified at the manifestation of the gifts. Paul admonished us to use them well (Rom. 12:6 – 8). Anything that is short of this is not of God.

What are the spiritual and physical gifts God has bestowed on you? How do you use them? A young priest told me how a lady came to their church for prayers. He called on one of the senior priests to join him in praying for the young lady. The senior priest asked if the lady is a member of the Church which he answered on the negative but wishes to start attending their church. The senior priest said he will not join because the lady is a prayer collector and not a member of their church. The young priest prayed for her and she left. She is presently a member of that church. If the young priest had told the lady what transpired, will that lady ever want to hear the priest or receive his prayers in that church? We should not discriminate with our spiritual gifts. Freely we received; freely we should give in whatever we have, be it spiritual or physical.

Food for Thought: How many people are benefiting from the gifts of God upon you?

Prayer: May I use my gifts, O Lord, for the benefit of all without discrimination in Jesus name.

BE CONSISTENT: Devotion for Wednesday May 4, 2016

BE CONSISTENT: Devotion for Wednesday May 4, 2016

Text: 2 Timothy 4:1 – 8     Memory verse: v 2

Consistency is one of the bedrocks for excellence. Before you can make your mark that will bring you to the podium for recognition, you would have shown a great deal of consistency in your career. Today, ‘My Daily Covenant with God’ is gaining popularity because we refused to be discouraged by what people say or do. We have weathered the storm in the past years and refused to give up. These are some of the lessons we learnt from our mentor, Robin Sharma in his book, ‘A Leader who had no title.’ How determined are you to make it to the podium in your career? It demands consistency. Are you already washing your net? Don’t give up. A little more effort will make all the difference in your career in Jesus name.

Paul tells Timothy in our text, that his call demands consistency; being ready in season and out of season to preach, teach, discipline, etc (4:2). This is the only way he can make his mark as a pastor. This call to be consistent is not only in the Christian ministerial work. Such is needed in all the careers of life. Before you can become known in your career, you would have shown more commitment, zeal, dedication, passion, enthusiasm, etc, more than others you work with. How passionate, committed and enthusiastic are you in your work as a minister of the gospel, as a Christian, as a teacher, trader, artisan, civil/public servant, etc? Be consistent because that will bring you to the peak of your career.

Food for Thought: How consistent are you in your Christianity and career?

Prayer: Help me O Lord, to be consistent in my Christian race and career so I will make it to the podium at last in Jesus name.

WHY SOME PEOPLE DON’T HELP: Devotion for TuesdayMay

WHY SOME PEOPLE DON’T HELP: Devotion for Tuesday May 3, 2016

Text: Acts 9:10 – 18      Memory verse: v 13

There are so many people who are suffering today just because their appointed helpers have refused to help. They will always have one reason or another why they won’t help people who come to them for help or they come across. One of the reasons people don’t help is poor understanding of how their wealth came about (see yesterday’s devotion). They will question; where were you when I was making my money? This is sheer arrogance. Another reason is in 9:13 – our past or history. Some will recount what happened in the days of your forefathers and because of that they will not help anyone from your family.

Ananias initially refused to help Saul because of his past. He told God what he knew or heard about Saul. However, God insisted that he was the one chosen for the task. It was that insistence from God that made Ananias to help Saul. My prayer is that God in His mercies will insist that your helpers will come your way in Jesus name. The excuse of Ananias is contrary to the bible teaching concerning our relationship with our enemies – Love your enemies and do good to those who hate you (Matt 5:44; Lk. 6:27, 35; Rom. 12:14, 20; 1 Pet. 2:23; 3:9). As Christians, we should not fail to help people by recounting what happened in the past or any reason at all. We should behave like our Father in heaven as we have in Matt. 5:45.

Action: As you go out today, ensure you do good to someone who actually needs help without counting the cost.

Prayer: God, help me to love my enemies and to do good to them because it is the best way to sow your love in their hearts.

IT IS A GIFT: Devotion for Monday May 2, 2016

IT IS A GIFT: Devotion for Monday May 2, 2016

Text: 1 Corinthians 4:7 – 13     Memory verse: v 7

Any sensible Christian has no reason to be proud; all we have, or are, or do, that is good, is the result of the free and rich grace of God. We shouldn’t be proud, if really we’ve understood that we are what we are just because of the grace God has bestowed on us. Paul made it clear that the difference between us Christians in terms of talents, etc depends on the gift we have received from God. Here, Paul asked the rhetorical questions so they could see the silliness of their prideful positions against one another. We should understand that no one is better than anyone else. Everything we have; all we’ve accomplished and every gift we’ve received—all came from God. No one has any right to boast about anything.

The problem of looking down on others stems from pride, arrogance and ignorance. Pride because you have some gifts others have. Arrogance because you thought it is by your own strength and ignorance because you don’t know that all you have are gifts from God. Beloved, whatever we are or have as at today, are all gifts from God – life, talent, wealth, good job, etc. Do not think you deserve or worked harder for it. Just like salvation (Eph. 2:8 & 9), it is a gift from God and you should be humble enough to appreciate this and not to pride yourself about what was given to you.

Food for Thought: John 3:27

Prayer: God, may I not forget that what I am and have, are gifts from you. Help me to use them judiciously to your praise and glory in Jesus name.
