DON’T BE HELD BACK: Devotion for Friday April 1, 2016

DON’T BE HELD BACK: Devotion for Friday April 1, 2016

Text: Luke 15:17 – 21              Memory verse: v18

One major problem of many people today is fear of making a trial. This has resulted in most people unable to reach the summit of their career or achieve their life’s dream. There are many too, whose pass has glued them to a place or certain level of achievement that they find it difficult to progress further. In 2 Kings 7 is a story of 4 lepers who dared what healthy men were afraid to do. They entered the enemy’s territory in search of food. God honoured their faith and they were not only successful but unselfish about what God did for them. Their leprous condition would have deterred them. But no! They went ahead. What are those things you see as hindrance in your life? What are the things holding you back from venturing? God is telling you today that you can and should go ahead. Don’t limit yourself.

In our text is the well known story of the Prodigal Son. He did not allow his sin against his father to hold him back from returning to him. He knew that going back to the father is the best opportunity left for him. Though he considered his sins, he decided to move ahead. At last he got a surprise of his life. Beloved, have you been held back by fear, sin or intimidation of the devil? Have you given up repentance because you feel that your sins are too much? Why then did Jesus come to the world? Is it not to save sinners? Don’t be held back by your past. Forge ahead. As we enter this new month, I urge you to lose every chain that has hitherto held you back. Step out and surely you will step into your miracles of salvation, healing, deliverance and success.

We wish you a happy new month!

Food for Thought: What are the things holding you back from moving ahead?

Prayer: Lord God, open my eyes to whatsoever is holding me back deliver me from them in Jesus name.

THE KEY TO SALVATION: Devotion for Thursday March 31, 2016

THE KEY TO SALVATION: Devotion for Thursday March 31, 2016

Text: Romans 10:1 – 11      Memory verse: v 9

The Jews built on a false foundation, and refused to come to Christ for free salvation by faith. The zeal Israelites had, was not enlightened, wise, or according to truth (10:2). Some people may have great zeal in religion, and yet be blinded and hardened in sin. Right zeal will be in accordance with truth and duty; holy in character, kind in spirit, and useful in tendency. The strictness of the law showed men their need of salvation by grace, through faith. It was based on this reason; Paul tries to point out to them the key to salvation by grace which God has offered us in Christ (10:4ff). This he posited in 10:9 “That if you confess with your mouth the Lord Jesus and believe in your heart that God has raised Him from the dead, you will be saved.” His stand on this is the truth expressed in 10:10.

Two things are necessary for salvation; inward faith in Christ Jesus and public confession of that faith. Paul mentions them because both are necessary for salvation; the inward faith in Christ, and the outward confession of Him. It is based on the outward confession of sin that someone is baptised into the body of Christ. Rom 10:8–11 show us how to become a Christian. Salvation is as close as your own lips and heart. People think it must be a complicated process, but it is not. If we believe in our heart and say with our mouth that Christ is the risen Lord, we will be saved. Have you received salvation? If not, this is your opportunity. Grab it with two hands.

Food for Thought: The basic proofs of our Christian faith are; to believe in Christ (inward faith) and confession that Jesus is Lord (outward faith).

Prayer: Heavenly Father, as I have confessed that Jesus is my Lord, help me to abide by it all the days of my life.

POWER TO YOUR DYING BODY: Devotion for Wednesday March 30, 2016

POWER TO YOUR DYING BODY: Devotion for Wednesday March 30, 2016

Text: Romans 8:10 – 17                Memory verse: v 11

If the Holy Spirit be in us, Christ is in us. He dwells in the heart by faith. Christ’s Spirit lives within our human spirits. The presence of Christ in us will automatically make our bodies to resist and reject sin (8:10). Any Christian who receives the grace and Spirit of Christ, and continues to live under its influence, a life of obedience to the Divine will, shall have a resurrection to eternal life; and the resurrection of Christ shall be the pattern after which they shall be raised (8:11). The point Paul made here is that we are promised the physical resurrection of our bodies into eternal life. The Spirit of God who raised Jesus from the dead will also give life to us. So there is wonderful hope even for our prone-to-decay bodies.

In another dimension, the presence of Holy Spirit resuscitates our physical bodies too. When the Spirit of God dwells in you, Satan and sickness will not have upper hand in your body. Are you sick in the body and desire healing from God? Then you need to invite the Spirit of God into your life. You can start with praises for God dwells in the praises of His people. His presence will bring life to that withered hand and crippled legs in Jesus name. You, who is sick, and reading this devotion, God is saying to you, give me chance to come in now and you will see the difference. Will you do that?

Food for Thought: Life comes from the Spirit of God (Ezekiel 37:10)

Prayer: Release upon me O Lord, your Spirit to my dying body to revive it again in Jesus name.

JUST REWARD FOR SIN: Devotion for Tuesday March 29, 2016

JUST REWARD FOR SIN: Devotion for Tuesday March 29, 2016

Text: Romans 6:12 – 23              Memory verse: v 23

After the admonition to walk in newness of life by Paul as we read yesterday, he went further to speak about the just reward for sin. He started by saying, “Therefore, do not let sin reign in your mortal body, that you should obey it in its lusts” (6:12). That was a conclusion of his exhortation in 6:1–11. He gave this charge because of the consequences and reward for sin. Most people play with sin as if it has no consequence. If we are dead to sin, how can sin still control us? Christians died to sin at repentance, but as long as they live in their mortal bodies, they will have the compulsion to sin. But only because we have died to sin do we have the power to no longer let it control us. Worthy of note is the question in 6:15. “To refuse obedience to the law, under pretence of Christian liberty; to sin because we are not under the law, but under grace; is a turning the grace of God into wantonness, and to use our Christian liberty as an occasion to the flesh” according to William Burkett’s Note.

This result of sin is not just physical death; everyone dies physically, believers and nonbelievers alike. This refers to eternal separation from God. This is the wage that a person receives for his or her rebellion against God. But instead of wages, those who believe receive a free gift from God; the eternal life. Just as the labourer is worthy of his hire and feels it to be his due, so death is the due for sin, the wages the sinner has formed for himself. The good news is that God has offered us eternal life as a gift. Have you received yours?

Food for Thought: Are you working for wage or gift?

Prayer: God, your gift for me is eternal life. Grant that I will not miss out in Jesus name.

WALK IN NEWNESS OF LIFE: Devotion for Monday March 28, 2016

WALK IN NEWNESS OF LIFE: Devotion for Monday March 28, 2016

Text: Romans 6:1 – 11      Memory verse: v 4

Yesterday was Easter, the resurrection of Jesus from death which gave us hope for eternal life. This is the reason Paul said, “Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation; old things have passed away; behold, all things have become new (2 Cor. 5:17).” That new creation is the life that he talks about here in our bible reading for today. The newness of life starts at repentance. It is expected that believers must die to sin, and live to God (6:1, 2). Dying to sin is likened to death of Christ and living to God is likened to the resurrection of Christ. Our baptism teaches the necessity of dying to sin, and being as it were buried with all ungodly and unholy pursuits, and of rising to walk with God in newness of life. Those who believe in Christ are baptized into Him and baptized into His death; in other words, they are baptized to become one with Christ Jesus. As he died, we die to our old, sinful lifestyle, and a new life begins.

If we believe that our old, sinful lives are dead and buried, we have a powerful motive to resist sin. We can consciously choose to treat the desires and temptations of the old nature as if they were dead. Then we can continue to enjoy our wonderful new life with Jesus (Gal. 3:27; Col. 3:1-4). Are you still under the influence of old life? Is sin still having upper hand in your life? Then you are not walking in newness of life and resurrection power hasn’t affected you.

Food for Thought: Our death with Christ to sin implies our resurrection with Christ to God, which is to us a new life of holiness. Is that true about you?

Prayer: Lord, help me to walk in newness of life as one who has resurrected with Christ through my baptism.

HE IS RISEN: Devotion for Easter Day Sunday March 27, 2016

HE IS RISEN: Devotion for Easter Day Sunday March 27, 2016

Text: Matthew 28:1 – 10     Memory verse: v 7

Beloved, Happy Easter! Today, we celebrate the resurrection of our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ. Severally, He foretold about this day (Matt. 12:40; 17:9, 23) outside the prediction of the prophets. Mary Magdalene and her colleague came to the tomb with the mind to anoint the body (Lk. 24:1) but they met empty tomb.

The angel who announced the good news of the Resurrection to the women gave them four messages: (1) don’t be afraid. The reality of the resurrection brings joy, not fear. When you are afraid, remember the empty tomb. (2) He isn’t here. Jesus is not dead and is not to be looked for among the dead. He is alive, with His people. (3) Come, see. The women could check the evidence themselves. The tomb was empty then, and it is empty today. The resurrection is a historical fact. (4) Go quickly and tell. They were to spread the joy of the Resurrection. We, too, are to spread the great news about Jesus’ resurrection.

Resurrection of Jesus is the cornerstone of Christianity. If Christ didn’t rise from death, there wouldn’t have been any gospel today. Our gospel is simple; Jesus died for our sins, rose and will come again; so if we believe in Him, we will have eternal life. One of the messages the angel gave was go quickly and tell them. This was also the injunction Jesus gave as He resurrected. How far are you telling others about this Good News? If we are not doing that, it means that we are ashamed of Him and He will deny us at the end (Mk. 8:38).

Food for Thought: If Jesus didn’t resurrect, what would have been our position today?

Prayer: May I never be ashamed of telling people about you, O Lord.

RIGHT USE OF WEALTH: Devotion for Easter Eve, Saturday March 26, 2016

RIGHT USE OF WEALTH: Devotion for Easter Eve Saturday March 26, 2016

Text: Matthew 27: 57 – 66    Memory verse: v 58

Joseph from Arimathea had become a disciple of Jesus. He was a member of the council of Jewish leaders. According to Luke, he was a good and just man, who never consented to their decision to kill Jesus. He was also waiting for the kingdom of God (Lk. 23:50, 51). This was the man God used to give Jesus a befitting burial. Jesus acquaintances (27:49) stood afar off; they had no money to bear the charge neither the courage to bear the odium of burying Him decently; but God raised one that had both. God raised Joseph Arimathea to do the burial because he made himself available for God to use. Again, if the known disciples were the ones that asked for His body, it would have been hard for them because the Jewish leaders would have opposed it. God is wisdom and He does His things wisely.

Despite his riches, he was humble enough to serve God. The reason he went and asked for the body of Jesus was because he wants to bury it honourably otherwise, by the Jewish customs; He would have either been burned, or buried in the common place appointed for executed criminals. Are you rich? Does your wealth control you or you control your wealth? What areas do you channel your riches: to intimidate neighbours, to abuse people or to help the needy and humanity? Joseph of Arimathea showed his love for God. What about you?

Food for Thought: “He that will not permit his wealth to do any good to others while he is living prevents it from doing good to himself when he is dead” – Colton.

Prayer: Lord, grant me the right understand of the essence of wealth and talent you have bestowed on me so I can use them to your praise and glory.

AT CALVARY: Devotion for Good Friday March 25, 2016

AT CALVARY: Devotion for Good Friday March 25, 2016

Text: Luke 23:32 – 49    Memory verse: v 33

Luke called the place where Jesus was crucified, Calvary while the other three evangelists called it, Place of Skull or Golgotha in Hebrew (Matt. 27:33; Mk. 15:22 & Jn. 19:17). Calvary is a hill just outside the city walls of Jerusalem where the Crucifixion of Jesus Christ took place. Why the choice of Calvary? The Chief Priest and Romans soldiers choose the place which was conspicuous so as to make mockery of Jesus but they never knew it was symbolic. See Heb. 13:11, 12 and compare it with these passages Ex. 29:14; Lev. 4:11–12, 21; 6:30; 9:11; 16:27; Num. 19:3. He was crucified there because bearing the sins of the world (just like the lamb in the Old Testament bearing sin) is burnt outside the camp.

The first thing Jesus did at Calvary was to plea for forgiveness of those who were crucifying Him, an evidence of His mission on earth. Another thing He did was to purchase and procure for us, forgiveness of sins. He also pardoned one of the criminals right there, a proof that true repentance is never late. But we should not procrastinate about it because we may not have the grace this criminal enjoyed. As the soldiers taunted Him, He was humble and didn’t retaliate (1 Pet 2:21–24). His death was recorded in 23:46 while the reaction of the Centurion to His death is in 23:47. Having died for us, we should seek to glorify God by true repentance and conversion; by a sober, righteous, and godly life; and by employing our talents in the service of Him who died for us and rose again.

Food for Thought: Christ became accursed for us upon the cross. What have you done to reciprocate this sacrifice?

Prayer: God may this ultimate sacrifice made for me not be in vain.

AN EXAMPLE FOR YOU: Devotion for Maundy Thursday March 24, 2016

AN EXAMPLE FOR YOU: Devotion for Maundy Thursday March 24, 2016

Text: John 13:1 – 17        Memory verse: v 15

Feet were usually washed before the meal. But Jesus waited until during the supper (13:2) to make the act stand out as noteworthy. Jesus knew that He could take a servant’s role without losing anything (13:3). The purpose of this action was to fix in their minds the nature of true greatness. This could be traced to the event in Lk. 22:24–30 when the disciples were in dispute over who was going to be the greatest in the kingdom. Jesus had taught them that greatness in the kingdom comes through serving others (Matt 20:26-27), but they had not learned the lesson. Thus, He gave them this unforgettable illustration. According to Brunner, “When a man turns to God desiring to serve Him, God directs his attention to the world and its need.” Have you realised this truth?

At first Peter rejected Jesus’ foot washing (13:6-11), which pointed toward Jesus’ cleansing work on the cross. But when Peter saw that this foot washing was symbolic of cleansing from sin, he requested to be washed from head to foot. He misunderstood Jesus the Messiah’s servant role and therefore his own role as disciple. In 13:10 Jesus came back to the literal point. The spiritual point had already been understood. They were already clean. Jesus was also showing His disciples what it meant to serve; what it meant to be great in the kingdom of God. His challenge in 13:15 is for us today. Are you serving God in others?

Food for Thought: “When a man turns to God desiring to serve Him, God directs his attention to the world and its need” – Brunner.

Prayer: God teach me humility and service for humanity in Jesus name.

A DIFFERENT KISS: Devotion for Wednesday in Holy Week March 23, 2016

A DIFFERENT KISS: Devotion for Wednesday in Holy Week March 23, 2016

Text: Matthew 26:47 – 68       Memory verse: v 49

Naturally, kiss is an expression of love (affection) or greeting. One would easily think that the kiss Judas gave to Jesus was expression of affection or greeting judging from the definition of kiss but this one is a kiss with difference. Such a traitorous kiss was the depth of depravity; enmity under the guise of friendship. That was pretence at the highest level where Judas called Jesus Rabbi while he had already betrayed Him. This is similar to what happened between Joab and Amasa in 2 Sam. 10:9, 10. Read it. Treachery is sin and has its punishment. Though Judas aided the fulfillment of the scripture by betraying his Master, he had his reward (Matt 26:24).

There are many ways we betray Jesus. Judas did his with a kiss. Some of us do ours with lies, denial, negligence, abuse of Christian faith, etc. We should note that betraying our Master is sin. Some of us betray Jesus as a result of pressures of peer group, friends, colleagues, etc, who lure us into sin. As Christians, we must be careful in choosing our friends because it is easier for a friend to betray you than an enemy. Judas was a ready tool in the hands of the Chief Priest because he was an insider in the ministry of Jesus. It is my prayer that God will not allow you to have friends that will betray you in Jesus name.

Action: Write down some of the ways people betray one another.

Prayer: Ask God to forgive you in any way you have betrayed Him.

MADE TO STUMBLE: Devotion for Tuesday in Holy Week March 22, 2016

MADE TO STUMBLE: Devotion for Tuesday in Holy Week March 22, 2016

Text: Matthew 26:31 – 46   Memory verse: v 31

Improper self-confidence, like that of Peter, is the first step to a fall. We all are prone to be over-confident. The reason is what John said in 1 Jn. 4:4. Satan is active to lead us astray and sometimes God leaves us to ourselves, so as to humble us. This over-confidence is the reason why Paul warns us in 1 Cor. 10:12. Jesus predicted that His disciples will desert Him (26:31). Peter as usual was quick to react that even though others were made to stumble but not him (26:33). Self confident indeed! Then Jesus told him how he will deny Him (26:34). These revelations were to caution him and lead him into prayers but he didn’t. This is how some of us behave. Don’t think that you are too spiritual to backslide in faith. If Satan can tempt Jesus, who are you that he can’t tempt?

Jesus expected His disciples to pray after the warning in 26:31 as He took them to Gethsemane but He was disappointed. The warning in 26:31 was meant to challenge them into serious prayers for themselves and their Master but it wasn’t so. How do we take cautions especially from the bible? In a fellowship, a sister through revelation gave a caution that a girl will be used to seduce one of the brothers. The leader of the fellowship took it lightly and eventually, he became the victim. Be careful and watchful.

Food for Thought: 1 Corinthians 10:12

Prayer: God may I not be over confident and neglect your warnings in Jesus name.

SHE DID HER BEST: Devotion for Monday March 21, 2016

SHE DID HER BEST: Devotion for Monday in Holy Week March 21, 2016

Text: Mark 14:1 – 9   Memory verse: v 8

It takes someone who knows the value of the sacrifice Jesus made for us on the Cross of Calvary to give freely and willingly. Jesus first poured out Himself for mankind. He did that without reservations. It was a willingly offer (Jn. 10:15, 17; 15:13 & Rom. 5:7, 8). Most people who are faithful in their tithe and offering are people who have received the touch of God.

Jesus commended this woman's pious attention to the notice of believers in all ages. Those who honour Christ he will honour (1 Sam 2:30). Jesus reprimanded the disciples, but comforted Mary. The expensive ointment poured on Jesus was a good thing to do for him; a beautiful, acceptable, appealing act of love and sacrifice and Jesus declared it to be so. Her act was a public declaration of her faith in Him as Messiah.

Christ poured out His soul unto death for us, and shall we think anything too precious for Him? Do we give Him the precious ointment of our best affections? We should love Him with all our hearts. At times, it is common for zeal and affection to be misunderstood and blamed but we should remember that charity to the poor will not excuse us from particular acts of piety to the Lord Jesus. Jesus’ words were valuable lessons to Judas and the disciples that devotion to Christ is worth more than money. How devoted are you to God?

Food for Thought: What can you offer to God that is equal to salvation He gave you?

Prayer: Lord, help me to love you to the extent of offering you the best thing I have in Jesus name.

WHO IS THIS? Devotion for Palm Sunday March 20, 2016

WHO IS THIS? Devotion for Palm Sunday March 20 2016

Text: Matthew 21:1 – 11  Memory verse: v 10

Happy Palm Sunday! When Jesus had been born and the wise men had come seeking him, the entire city of Jerusalem was ‘disturbed’ (Matt 2:3). Again, Jesus caused a great disturbance in the city. To the question, “Who is this?” came the reply, “It’s Jesus, the prophet from Nazareth in Galilee.” But Jesus was not just another prophet; He was the prophet who was to come (Deut 18:15-18). No wonder the city was in an uproar! There was great excitement. The sight of such a multitude, the shouts of the people, and the triumphant procession through the city, excited much attention and inquiry to know who was being celebrated. By “Who is this,” the questionnaire wanted to know the person worthy of such honour.

With this triumphant entry into Jerusalem, Jesus boldly declared Himself King, and the crowd gladly acknowledged that and joined Him. When Jesus came into Jerusalem all the city was moved; some perhaps were moved with joy, who had waited for the consolation of Israel; others, of the Pharisees, were moved with envy. Where do you belong in these two groups? Do you ask, who is this, because you want to know Jesus of Nazareth or you want to ridicule Him?

Food for Thought: Why do you seek to know Jesus – to ridicule Him or to serve Him as Lord and Saviour?

Prayer: Grant, O God, that I will know Jesus in order to serve Him as my Lord and Saviour.

WHAT MAY I DO FOR YOU? Devotion for Saturday March 19, 2016

WHAT MAY I DO FOR YOU?      Saturday March 19, 2016

Text: 2 Kings 2:9 – 12              Memory verse: v 9

Today’s topic is similar to that of Thursday but what led to the question here is different. Elijah was about to be taken away by God and his faithful servant and some other prophets knew about this. While other prophets were comfortable with their position Elisha who was a mere servant wanted to step into his master’s shoes. He was determined to get something from Elijah before God takes him away. It was his determination and persistence that made Elijah to ask the question that forms our text today.

There are lessons for us here. 1. When you have a need, be determined to find a solution to it in a godly way. Elisha was determined. All words of discouragement from Elijah and people did not deter him. He kept following. We should not be deterred by what people say. We should always keep our focus on God (Heb 12:2). 2. Elisha persisted and was focused. Most times after a session of prayers about our need, we give up. It ought not to be so. Jesus taught us about persistence in prayer in Lk. 18:1ff. We shouldn’t give up easily. Keep on trying; your miracle is in the next attempt. 3. What Elisha asked was in the will of God. He never asked for mansion, wealth or other worldly things rather he asked for what he will use to the glory of God and he got it at the end. Most times our request in our fasting and prayers are mundane things. When we ask from God what pleases Him, He will always grant our requests.

Food for Thought: Elisha’s desire for a double portion of the spirit is not out of greed but that which will prepare him for usefulness and for glory of God.

Prayer: Grant to me, O Lord, everything that will be useful for me in serving you and humanity in Jesus name.

PRIDE GOES BEFORE A FALL: Devotion for Friday March 18, 2016

PRIDE GOES BEFORE A FALL:  Devotion for Friday March 18, 2016

Text: Esther 5:9 – 14         Memory verse: v 12

Self-admirers and self-flatterers are really self-deceivers. The worst thing that can happen to someone is keeping a bad friend and spouse. When you have a spouse or friends that are God-fearing and truthful, you can hardly run into problem. Haman came home rejoicing for the honour of being invited to a dinner with the king and queen. However, to him, his joy was not complete with Mordecai being at the king’s gate. I pray that your presence will cause problem for your enemies in Jesus name.

Thus Haman sought the consent of his wife, Zeresh and friends. They suggested gallows to hang Mordecai after seeking for permission from the king (5:13). This was pleasing to Haman (5:14). According to Family Bible Note, “The measures which men take for the destruction of others often prove the means of their own; and while they glory in anticipated victory, they sink into irretrievable ruin.” This was the case of Haman. Please make time to read the chapter six.

Haman’s family and friends, who were as arrogant as he, suggested that the gallows be 75 feet high. They wanted to make sure that all the people of the city saw Mordecai’s death and would be reminded of the consequences of disobeying Haman. Ironically, these high gallows allowed everyone to see Haman’s death. Pride leads to destruction. It was pride that destroyed Belshazzar. Beware how you live your life because “There is nothing into which the heart of man so easily falls as pride. And yet there is no vice that is more frequently, more emphatically, and more eloquently condemned in Scripture” according Charles Spurgeon.

Food for Thought: “A man's pride will bring him low, but the humble in spirit will retain honour” – Prov. 29:23.

Prayer: Almighty God, grant me humble spirit and remove every spirit of pride in me which leads to destruction.

WHAT IS YOUR REQUEST? Devotion for Thursday March 17, 2016

WHAT IS YOUR REQUEST? Devotion for Thursday March 17, 2016

Text: Esther 5: 1 – 8    Memory verse: v 3

The story of Esther and Mordecai in this book teaches us that we can gain power and favour from fasting and prayers. Esther risked her life by coming before the king which was against the law. Her courageous act is a model for us to follow in approaching a difficult or dangerous task. Like Esther, we can: (1) Count the cost. Esther realized her life was at stake. (2) Set priorities. She believed that the safety of the Jewish race was more important than her life. (3) Prepare. She gathered support and fasted. (4) Determine a course of action and move ahead boldly. She didn’t think too long about it, allowing the interlude to lessen her commitment to what she had to do. Do you have to face a hostile audience, confront a friend on a delicate subject, or talk to your family about changes to be made? Rather than dreading difficult situations or putting them off, take action with confidence by following Esther’s inspiring example.

It was Esther’s courageous move that led to the question which is our topic for the day. The king noticed that something led Esther to risk her life and thus he raised the question and she demanded a dinner with the king and Haman. If God can grant Esther such favour before men how much more when He is involved (Matt 7:11)? Beloved, what is your request? Is it money for bills? Is it fruit of the womb? Is it a job? If you follow Esther’s model, God will certainly move in your favour.

Food for Thought: God issued us a blank cheque in Matt 7:7. How do you make good use of it?

Prayer: Make your request known to God bearing in mind Num 14:28 and Matt 7:7

AT THE APPROPRIATE TIME: Devotion for Wednesday March 16, 2016

AT THE APPROPRIATE TIME: Devotion for Wednesday March 16, 2016

Text: Ecclesiastics 3:1 – 10            Memory verse: v 1

Most times, God allows us to pass through problems of life which He uses to teach us some life lessons. Solomon is one person in the Bible who had everything (wisdom, power, riches, honor, reputation, God’s favour) and he is the one who discussed the ultimate emptiness of all that this world has to offer. Solomon’s message here is that God has a plan for all people and has provided cycles of life, each with its work for us to do.

According to Life Application Notes, “Timing is important. All the experiences listed in these verses are appropriate at certain times. The secret to peace with God is to discover, accept, and appreciate God’s perfect timing. The danger is to doubt or resent God’s timing. This can lead to despair, rebellion, or moving ahead without His advice.”

Although we may face many problems that seem to contradict God’s plan, these should not be barriers to believing in Him, but rather opportunities to discover that, without God, life’s problems have no lasting solutions! Do you think you are running out of time in respect of marriage, child birth, university education, securing a job, etc? Time is never against you. At God’s own time (appropriate time), He will remember you. Never give up!

Food for Thought: God shall judge the righteous and the wicked, for there is a time there for every purpose and for every work – Ecclesiastes 3:17

Prayer: Almighty God, your time for me is perfect. Help me never to doubt or resent your timing for me.

HE DID NOT DISAPPOINT GOD: Devotion for Tuesday March 15, 2016

HE DID NOT DISAPPOINT GOD: Devotion for Tuesday March 15, 2016

Text: Job 1:20 – 22    Memory verse: v 22

We are fond of asking God why He allowed problems and troubles of life to come our way. The bad impression about Christian life is that most of us believe that nothing evil, sickness or problems of life should come our way. We all know that Christ’s suffering was His path to glory and severally in the scriptures, He intimated us that if He suffered, we shouldn’t expect anything less.

In our text, Job did not hide his overwhelming grief and he didn’t lose his faith in God; instead, his emotions showed that he was human and that he loved his family. Upon all these calamities, He did not charge God with acting unkindly towards him by asking God, Why? Rather, he accepted all with faith. Anyone who assigns motives to God’s actions is foolish. If Job had used hasty words against God (see Prov. 8:36), he would have sinned and injured himself.

God created our emotions, and it is not sinful or inappropriate to express them as Job did. If you have experienced a deep loss, a disappointment, or heartbreak, admit your feelings to yourself and others, and grieve. Thereafter, pick yourself up and begin life again. God boasted about Job and despite the quick succession of calamities that came his way, he did not disappoint God.

Beloved, how do you handle the problems of life that confront you? Do you lose your faith simply because you are in another environment? Do you speak harshly and thereafter, you begin to regret? God expects us to show maturity of faith when passing through trials of life

Food for Thought: We know true Christians during trials and temptation.

Prayer: Help me never to disappoint you O Lord when I am faced with temptation.

THE DAY OF MANY TROUBLES: Devotion for Monday March 14, 2016

THE DAY OF MANY TROUBLES: Devotion for Monday March 14, 2016

Text: Job 1:13 – 19    Memory verse: v 19

In 1 Samuel chapter 3 is the story of how the Ark of God was captured by the Philistines when Eli was the Chief Priest. He also died with his two sons the same day. What a trouble for that family! As a family, where will they start mourning – three persons on the same day? That was a great loss to Israel and the family. We have heard how families had perished in inferno, accident, etc without any survivor. Families dying together may seem better in the eyes of men than for a man to have laboured for years, gathered wealth, had a family and just lose everything in a day. Some may even commit suicide. On the day of trouble, Satan unleashed his anger against Job in order to make him turn against God. He lost all his wealth, his children and properties. This was not even enough for Satan as he came back in Job chapter 2 to fight the more. When Job was being attacked, he never knew that it was his uprightness and integrity that attracted those troubles.

Most times we tend to believe that when we pass through troubles of life, it means that we have fallen out of favour with God. It is not true. The troubles all came upon Job at once; while one messenger of evil tidings was speaking, another followed (1:15, 16, 17 & 19). His dearest and most valuable possessions were his ten children; news is brought him that they are killed. So many people would have concluded that such calamities can only come on sinners. We should understand that in this world we will have troubles but in all, we should be of good cheer (Jn. 16:33) bearing in mind that God will make a way of escape for us (1 Cor. 10:13).

Food for Thought: “Man who is born of woman is of few days and full of trouble” – Job 14:1

Prayer: Lord, grant me the grace and enablement to endure the troubles of life knowing that better things await me in heaven.

CAN GOD VOUCH FOR YOU: Devotion for Sunday March 13, 2016

CAN GOD VOUCH FOR YOU: Devotion for Sunday March 13, 2016

Text: Job 1:6 – 12     Memory verse: v 8

Any Christian whose character God can’t vouch for is a deceit and candidate for hell. Before God can vouch for you as His son or daughter, you must have a constant fellowship/relationship with Him. He must see a desire for holiness and righteousness in your life. Such person is not just a churchgoer who doesn’t take God’s worship seriously. What we have in our text, is the story of how Satan came into the gathering of believers. His aim and target was Job. God knew him and all his thoughts and was quick to point it out to him. What does this omniscience nature of God teach us of God meeting our needs? Satan asserted that the blessings of God and hedge around Job are the reasons why he was a Christian (1:10 & 11). But God was quick to vouch for Job that he was a sincere Christian (1:8). He gave Satan the permission to touch his properties and not his soul (1:12) as a proof of what He knows about Job.

God confidently pointed out the allegiance of his servant Job. Satan’s response to God shows that he had scrutinized Job carefully. Do you know that Satan watches every moment of your life to find fault on how to accuse or attack you? Satan does this always against all Christians in order to find their weaknesses and turn them against God. However, in all these, can God vouch for you that you are not compromising, living in sin, pompous, etc? Search yourself now.

Food for Thought: What can God say today about your relationship with Him?

Prayer: Make me faithful servant that you can vouch for O Lord, my God.

IDOLS IN THE HEART: Devotion for Saturday March 12, 2016

IDOLS IN THE HEART: Devotion for Saturday March 12, 2016

Text: Ezekiel 14:1 – 11         Memory verse: v 3

God knows the intents of our hearts in whatever we do, which most of us are unaware of or undermine. That is why most things we think that matter are not so with God and vice versa. These elderly people who came to Ezekiel have not actually repented of their sins before coming to God. With one hand they held on to sin and were using the other hand to inquire of God. God cannot be mocked. Their offence is that they have made idols in their hearts which can never take the place of God. God says He is a jealous God. He doesn’t want to share our hearts with idols. Thus He instructed them to repent (14:6) so as to avoid the consequences that might follow (14:8–11).

Idols in the heart according to our bible reading are things that made them to stumble and fall into sin. Beloved, what are the idols that can occupy our hearts and make us stumble? Can you mention five of those idols in hearts of people? Admittedly, most Christians have set up idols of money/wealth, hatred, anger, pride, lust, etc, which easily lead them into sin. God doesn’t take pleasure in the outward form of worship when it is connected with a wicked heart and life. He cannot be deceived by those who come to inquire of Him, and He will not allow Himself to be mocked by people who claim to be serving God and idols at the same time. If they love iniquity and secretly practise it, He will answer them in wrath, and not in mercy. Therefore be warned and don’t be a victim.

Action: Write down things that can become idols in your heart.

Prayer: Deliver me, O Lord, my God, from every idol in my heart so that my worship will be acceptable to you in Jesus name.

ARE YOU A VESSEL FOR HONOUR? Devotion for Friday March 11, 2016

ARE YOU A VESSEL FOR HONOUR? Devotion for Friday March 11, 2016

Text: 2 Timothy 2:19 – 21                Memory verse: v 21

The food for thought that ended our devotion for Wednesday is part of our text for today. Vessel unto honour literally means a vessel that is useful in honourable way. When God used Assyrians to punish Israel, they were useful in the hands of God but not for honour because they were punished at the end too. God requires us to be vessels unto honour for that was the reason behind our creation. Here, Paul admonishes us that we should be mindful of how we live our lives because God knows those who are His (2:19). Therefore everyone who is a Christian should depart from iniquity (2:19). The reason for this advice is in 2:20, so that we can become vessels unto honour. When we cleanse ourselves from all forms of defilement, we will become “Vessels for honor, sanctified and useful for the Master, prepared for every good work.”

Have you cleansed yourself from all defilement? As a single or engaged Christian sister/brother, what is your secret life with your fiancé/fiancée? We can’t serve God and be useful in His hands when we are living in sin and compromise. To be a vessel unto honour we must avoid all forms of defilement be it in words, actions, reactions and deeds. Couples should be sincere in their relationships; we should love and be loveable, be at peace with all people and above all be sincere in our worship of God with faith in Christ Jesus.

Food for Thought: A sanctified life is pleasant to God and such is always a reliable instrument in His hands.

Prayer: God may I be a vessel unto honour in your house now and forever.

2016 WORLD KIDNEY DAY CELEBRATION

2016 WORLD KIDNEY DAY CELEBRATION

THEME: KIDNEY DISEASE & CHILDREN - ACT EARLY TO PREVENT IT

The 2016 World Kidney Day holds on 10th March, 2016. It is a day set aside to educate and to create awareness about our Kidneys. This year’s celebration focuses on “Kidney Disease and Children – Act Early to Prevent It.” In the campaign for this year, World Kidney Day organisers are calling on people to move their legs on the day in form of exercise, dance, etc. World Kidney Day raises awareness about Chronic Kidney Disease and stimulates discussions, education and policy development for improved prevention and treatment around the world.

World Kidney Day team passionately believes it is important we make the general public aware of kidney diseases which affect millions of people worldwide, including many children who may be at risk of kidney disease at an early age. It is therefore crucial that we encourage and facilitate education, early detection and a healthy life style in children, starting at birth and continuing through to old age, to combat the increase of preventable kidney damage including acute kidney injury and chronic kidney disease and to treat children with inborn and acquired disorders of the kidney.

In this campaign year, we are urging medical personnel, the media and other agencies should join forces once again to inform parents, caregivers, young patients, policy makers, the government and the general public of the importance of identifying and treating childhood kidney diseases, instilling an awareness of the risks for their future from kidney damage that originates in childhood, therefore building healthier future generations!

Kidney disease can affect children in various ways, ranging from treatable disorders without long-term consequences to life-threatening conditions.

Acute Kidney Injury (AKI) is a serious condition that develops suddenly, often lasts a short time and may disappear completely once the underlying cause has been treated and if the patient receives the needed medical management, but it can also have long-lasting consequences with life-long problems. On the other hand, Chronic Kidney Disease (CKD) doesn’t disappear with treatment and tends to worsen over time. CKD eventually leads to kidney failure (end-stage kidney disease - ESKD) and needs to be treated with a kidney transplant or blood-filtering treatments (dialysis) for life.

Acute Kidney Injury or AKI

An example of AKI is hemolytic uremic syndrome, or HUS. This is a kidney condition that develops when red blood cells are destroyed and block the kidneys’ filtering system. When the kidneys and glomeruli—the tiny units within the kidneys where blood is filtered—become clogged with the damaged red blood cells, they are unable to do their job. If the kidneys stop functioning, a child can develop acute kidney injury—the sudden and temporary loss of kidney function. Hemolytic uremic syndrome is a common cause of AKI in children.

Another cause of AKI, including children, is trauma such as burns, dehydration, bleeding, injury or surgery. Trauma can cause very low blood pressure, which in turn can result in insufficient blood supply to the kidneys leading to acute kidney failure.

Chronic Kidney Disease or CKD

CKD in children can be caused by birth defects (e.g. children born with only one kidney or with kidneys with abnormal structures), hereditary diseases (e.g. polycystic kidney disease), infection, nephrotic syndrome (a collection of symptoms with loss of protein in urine and water and salt retention in the body that indicate kidney damage), systemic diseases (involving many organs of the body including the kidneys, such as Lupus), urine blockage or reflux (e.g. problems of the urinary tract and bladder). From birth to age 4, birth defects and hereditary diseases are the leading causes of kidney failure. Between ages 5 and 14, kidney failure is most commonly caused by hereditary diseases, nephrotic syndrome, and systemic diseases. Between ages 15 and 19, diseases that affect the glomeruli are the leading cause of kidney failure.

Children’s kidney diseases are kidney diseases for life.  The majority of children with kidney disease progress to end-stage kidney diseases in adulthood. Therefore there is need to act fast by adopting some healthy life styles and preventive measures for adults and children too.

Some of the measures are these 9 Golden rules which can be applied to children are;

Keeping fit and active through regular exercise.

Keep regular control of your blood sugar level.

Monitor your blood pressure always

Eat healthy and keep your weight under check

Do not smoke

Maintain healthy fluid intake

Do not take over-the-counter pills on a regular basis

Check your kidney function if you have one of the high risk factors.

If children below 10 year have been diagnosed of diabetes and Kidney failure, it is important to subject our children to routine medical checkups because early detention will go a long way in helping people with kidney diseases to get good treatment on time and save them from kidney failure.

YOU WERE BORN FOR A REASON: Devotion for Thursday March 10, 2016

YOU WERE BORN FOR A REASON: Devotion for Thursday March 10, 2016

Text: Jeremiah 1:4 – 10     Memory verse: v 5

Our bible reading today, gives us insight into the truth that everyone of us was born for a reason. I have heard people complain bitterly that there is no reason living any more. I want us to understand that we were not born to fulfil numbers. You were not born into that family just because your parents needed a child. Rather God planned your birth because you have a role to play in your family, the church and your generation. There is a gap you will fill. The problem is ability to understand what role God has appointed you for. In 1:5, God told Jeremiah that before his birth, He ordained him a priest to nations. The reason for his birth was to become a prophet of God. When the family, church or generation need men to serve at different capacities, God raises men for those positions.

Beloved, God knew you, as he knew Jeremiah, long before you were born or even conceived. He thought about you and planned for you in various ways. When you feel discouraged or inadequate, remember that God has always thought of you as valuable and that He has a purpose in mind for you. Remember our devotion for Monday – For Constant Reminder. Do not give up now. You still have a future because there is a reason why God is still keeping you alive. That reason for your creation will be perfected and your generation will hear of you in Jesus name.

Food for Thought: God has created you for a purpose; to love, obey and serve Him and humanity. How are you fulfilling these purposes?

CHOSEN VESSEL FOR GOD: Devotion for Wednesday March 9, 2016

CHOSEN VESSEL FOR GOD: Devotion for Wednesday March 9, 2016

Text: Acts 9:10 – 15                      Memory verse: v 15

One proverbial saying of my people states that “When a thief has stolen to an extent, the custody of the house will be handed over to him.” Paul intensively persecuted the Church (Acts 9:1 & 2). From his testimonies later, he did those things out of zeal for God (Phil. 3:6) and in ignorance. Zeal without knowledge is catastrophic (Rom. 10:2). The statement of Paul in Acts 9:6a was a mark of surrender to God. This made God to mandate Ananias to go and help him out. Devil had used Paul so much so as to harden his heart but his experience on the road to Damascus was irresistible. He could not stand the power of God. When God was speaking with Ananias, He affirmed that Paul was a chosen vessel He will use. We know how much God used him. He was selected from that moment to preach the gospel of salvation by grace to the Jews and Gentiles alike (Gal. 1:15–17). He fulfilled that commission entrusted to him.

As Christians, God has chosen us as vessels unto righteousness to proclaim His praise (1 Pet 1:9). How are you fulfilling this? Paul persecuted the Church with zeal and God saw how useful that zeal will be in the propagation of the gospel by choosing him. Paul didn’t disappoint. God wants to use His gift in you and that is the reason He has chosen you as a Christian. How do you intend to be useful to God and humanity with that your gift? God didn’t choose you to become a liability to Him. He has invested in you. Therefore be a vessel unto honour.

Food for Thought: 2 Timothy 2:21

Prayer: Make me, O Lord, a vessel unto honour in your hand in Jesus name.

LEND TO GOD: Devotion for Tuesday March 8, 2016

LEND TO GOD: Devotion for  Tuesday March 8, 2016

Text: Proverbs 19:17      Memory verse: v 17

Our text for the day is a very interesting one because many people are confused about it and they have kept acting ignorantly. A friend gave me this request: “My Pastor, please help me in prayer. I am going through terrible bad times. I am so badly indebted. Nothing is moving around me and I have been seeking God’s face to help me. The more I am sowing the seed, the more things are getting worse. Cash, my electronics, my jeep car, all I have given with hope to be better but the opposite is what I get. I am running from my shop now because of debt. Please pray for me.” What led this friend into this is ignorance and lack of basic foundation of Christian faith. In 1 Cor. 13:3, Paul said, “And though I bestow all my goods to feed the poor, and though I give my body to be burned, but have not love, it profits me nothing.” From this passage it is worthy to note that lending to God must not be with conditions. It must come from a heart of love for God and the recipient. See Matt 6:1–2.

Our text says that the best investment of our property is in deeds of charity. Compassion is the inward principle of charity in the heart and it is to have pity on the poor. You may not have a kobo for the poor, yet you may have pity for them, a charitable concern and sympathy bearing in mind what Paul said in 1 Cor. 13:3. See also Isa. 58:10. Lending to the Lord or seed sowing shouldn’t be a priority due to desire to have more rather due to love for God and humanity. Anything outside of this will amount to regret of your charitable deeds and seed sowing. Let the love for God propel us in giving to God and fellow human beings in need.

Food for Thought: Isaiah 58:10

Prayer: Lord God, may love for you propel me in charitable deeds and seed sowing.

A CHOICE MUST BE MADE: Devotion for Sunday March 6, 2016

A CHOICE MUST BE MADE     Sunday March 6, 2016

Text: Jeremiah 21:8 – 14     Memory Verse: v 8

According to Catechism in the Book of Common Prayers, man created in the image of God means having freedom to make choices, etc. Every day, we are faced with options which make choices inevitable in our worship of God, relationship with others, food we eat, where to go and many other areas of our daily lives and living. However, if the choice we make turns against the will of God, we will be accountable for it if not in immediate terms, it will be later. Joshua gave the people of Israel the option of choosing whom to serve (Josh. 24:15–24).

Family Bible Notes posited that “The only path of safety for nations or individuals lies in submission to God's declared will, however humbling it may be to their pride.” In our text, God told Israel to either choose the way of life and the way of death (21:8). The reason for this option is in 21:9 & 10. The counsel Jeremiah gave was very displeasing to those who were flattered by their false prophets into a desperate resolution to hold out to the last extremity. Unfortunately it didn’t work. Most times, we make wrong choices because we are often led by the flesh and again God’s ways most times seem foolish in our eyes. Just like our memory verse, we have a choice to make now – heaven or hell. To choose heaven, you have to accept Christ as your Lord and Saviour. Choosing hell simply means refusal to repent. Have you made your choice?

Food for Thought: Deuteronomy 30:15

Prayer: I choose life this day, O Lord, and may I not disappoint you at the end in Jesus name.

UNLOCK YOUR HIDDEN TREASURE: Devotion for Friday March 4, 2016

UNLOCK YOUR HIDDEN TREASURE: Devotion for Friday March 4, 2016

Text: Joshua 1:1 – 9                        Memory verse: v 8

To every human being, there are deposits of treasures/gifts, which are waiting to be unlocked. These treasures or gifts can only become real and ours when we take some actions. There are many ways to unlock our hidden treasures. Majority of the ways are through revelation, challenges of life, reading of books, practices, etc. I became an author through the revelation I received from reading of books by my mentor, Robin Sharma. Some of his books opened my eyes to the enormous gifts in me and I realised that I can do something. Beloved, there are gifts/treasures and talents in you that are yet to manifest because you are not aware of them. I pray that God will reveal them to you. You will not die without realising that you have those gifts without using them for your generation in Jesus name.

Joshua had a task of leading the people into the Promised Land. He saw the kind of obstinate and rebellious heart they displayed under Moses. However, despite all these, God told him that he will succeed in leading them into the Promised Land on the condition that he incessantly meditates on the word of God. Josh 1:8b says, “For then ... (NKJV).” It means that “The grand means of inspiring and increasing true courage, is daily attention to the principles and precepts of the Bible, for the purpose of understanding and obeying them” as Family Bible Notes posited. For Joshua to discover his ability in leadership, he must as a matter of priority, read and meditate on the word of God to unlock that treasure in him. Some of us have the talent of becoming inventors, great athletes, great evangelists, pastors, teachers, doctors, nurses, etc, but fear have hindered us from attaining such greatness. God has an assurance for you in 1:9.

Food for Thought: Fear is the greatest obstacle to attaining our greatness in life.

Prayer: Lord God, remove every fear in me that is an obstacle to the manifestation of the treasures hidden in me in Jesus name.

THOSE GOD CHOOSES Thursday March 3, 2016

THOSE GOD CHOOSES    Thursday March 3, 2016

Text: 1 Corinthians 1:17 – 31  Memory verse: v 27

God’s wisdom in dealing with Man is unfathomable. It is really beyond human understanding. How can He choose the manger for the birth of His son? How can he choose fishermen to become bearers of His gospel? Why did He wait for Sarah to reach 90 years before blessing her with a child when her mates were already great grandmothers? Indeed God chooses the foolish things to shame our assumed wisdom because of what is stated in 1:19 and 29. See other reasons in Job 5:12-13; Isa. 29:14; 55:8 & 9. Paul is declaring that no amount of human knowledge can replace or bypass Christ’s work on the cross. If it could, Christ would be accessible only to the intellectually gifted and well educated, and not to ordinary people or to children. Hence God’s wisdom of salvation far supercedes all other wisdom.

Brethren, it is for this reason He chose you as a Christian. Come to think of it; it was not your knowledge, family background, wisdom, beauty, intellect, ability, etc that made God to chose you. Some of us have no educational qualification to interpret the bible but God uses our mouth effectively to communicate the gospel and turn hearts unto repentance. Therefore, we should glory in what God made us and not what we think we have achieved by human wisdom. Let all glory be ascribed unto God alone (1:30, 31).

Food for Thought: James 2:5

Prayer: Lord, thank you for choosing me as your own by your wisdom. Help me to live my life in gratitude and praise unto you and you alone.

GOD'S AMNESTY: Devotion for Wednesday March 2, 2016

GOD’S AMNESTY       Wednesday March 2, 2016

Text: Isaiah 43:22 – 28      Memory verse: v 25

Amnesty is pardon or prosecution free period. I picked this topic when there was the debate in Nigeria whether to offer Boko Haram members amnesty or not. Our memory verse is similar to what we have in Isa. 1:18. For it to be repeated by Isaiah, shows how serious God is about it. In our text, God showed the real condition between Him and Israel; they have not cared to call upon Him (43:22), neither did they offer sacrifices to him (43:23, 24). Despite all these, God, out of His abundant mercies opted to grant them amnesty and forgive them (43:25). This encourages us to repent because there is forgiveness with God, and it shows that divine mercy is free. When God forgives, He forgets.

God’s amnesty is still there for us till death. It was when Boko Haram rejected the amnesty offered by the Federal government that the President and Commander in Chief of Nigerian Armed forces ordered full onslaught against them. God’s amnesty is still on. Have you accepted the offer or you have rejected it the way Boko Haram did? Now is the time to decide. The amnesty ends at death. Once you die without accepting it, you will face prosecution and judgment of God. Decide now on what to do for your own good.

Food for Thought: “He that promised pardon on our repentance has not promised life till we repent” – Francis Quarles.

Prayer: God, help me to accept your amnesty now before it will be too late.

Awake From Sleep: Devotion for Friday October 9, 2020

MY DAILY COVENANT WITH GOD DEVOTIONAL Devotion for Friday October 9, 2020 Topic: Awake From Sleep                                Text...
